Job summary

Sizewell C is recruiting a Nuclear Safety Engineer to help establish pre-operational safety arrangements for a new nuclear power station in the UK. The role involves coordinating with the future operator, regulators and a range of stakeholders to uphold core nuclear safety principles.

You will work across workstreams such as reactor physics, safety case, regulation and operations, with regular time at Hinkley Point C to share learning and expertise. Travel to Sizewell C sites is required.

Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in engineering, science or a related discipline.
  • Understanding of the nuclear safety case and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong technical understanding of nuclear power plant operations, ideally related to PWR technology.
  • Ability to champion nuclear safety and provide constructive challenge to colleagues and stakeholders.

Sizewell C is entering an exciting phase of growth as we mature into an independent organisation and continue building one of the UK's largest and most important energy projects. We are now recruiting the below position:

Position:Nuclear Safety Engineer

Location: Flexible across all Sizewell C office locations, including Leiston, Ipswich, London, Bristol, Manchester and Gloucester - regular travel between Sizewell C locations and other sites will be required

Contract: Permanent, full-time

Salary: Starting from £66,866 with flexibility for the right candidate based on experience, plus benefits

Benefits include:
  • Annual Leave: 28 days per annum, increasing to 30 days after 5 years of service, plus bank holidays

Role Overview:

Join Sizewell C at a pivotal stage in the development of one of the UK's most significant nuclear infrastructure projects. As a Nuclear Safety Engineer, you will play a key role in establishing thepre-operational nuclearsafetygrouparrangements that will underpin the future safe and reliable operation of the power station.

You will be a key link between the nuclear safety case and the future operator, working with a wide range of stakeholders to ensure the fundamental nuclear safety principles of cooling, controlling and containing the core are upheld. You will also help demonstrate compliance with national and international regulatory requirements.

Reporting to the Nuclear Safety Manager, you will join the Pre-Operations Technical and SafetySupportProgramme. This programme is responsible for ensuring the future operating organisation has the people, processes, equipment, facilities and documentation needed to operate Sizewell C safely and reliably, in line with all licence, permit, regulatory and statutory requirements.

As the pre-operational programme develops, you will help establish and deliver four key nuclear safety workstreams:

  • Reactor physics, nuclear fuel and criticality
  • Safety case and risk
  • Regulation, legislation and reporting
  • Operations, engineering and maintenance support

You will specialise in at least one of these areas while developing a strong understanding across the wider function. This will be an opportunity to build technical breadth, contribute to a growing team and help shape the nuclear safety arrangements for a new nuclear power station.

You will work closely with the pre-operations team at Hinkley Point C, building strong relationships and ensuring learning and experience fromHinkley Point Care embedded within Sizewell C. Regular time at theHinkley Point Csite will be expected, alongside collaboration withother teamsacross Sizewell C.

Role Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development, understanding and application of the nuclear safety case, applying nuclear safety, reactor physics and criticality knowledge to support safe and reliable plant operation.
  • Support the development of operational, engineering, maintenance and emergency arrangements.
  • Represent the interests of the future operator across the wider pre-operations function, working collaboratively withvarious internal stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships with Hinkley Point C counterparts, sharing learning and ensuring relevant experience is embedded within the Sizewell C Pre-Operations Function.
  • Provide constructive challenge, identify opportunities to improve nuclear safety and ways of working, and adapt effectively to changing priorities within a dynamic pre-operational environment.
  • Contribute to the development of a small, effective and resilient Nuclear Safety team as the pre-operational programme progresses.
About You
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in engineering, science or a related discipline.
  • Understanding of nuclear reactor physics, the Nuclear Site Licence and wider nuclear regulatory requirements.
  • Strong technical understanding of nuclear power plant operations, ideallyrelated to Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) technology.
  • Understanding of the role of a Nuclear Safety Group within an operational nuclear power station.
  • Understanding of the nuclear safety case, including its principles, purpose and application within an operational environment.
  • Ability to champion nuclear safety and confidently provide constructive challenge to colleagues, peers and stakeholders.
  • Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions and organisations.
  • Flexible and adaptable, able to work effectively in a dynamic project environment with changing priorities.
  • Self-motivated, proactive and able to take ownership of work within your area of responsibility.
Desirable
  • Knowledge and experience of nuclear physics within an operationalor new-build context.
  • Knowledge of the EPR design.
  • Experience working on Sizewell C, Hinkley Point C or another nuclear new-build project.
  • Experience identifying and developing ideas and opportunities for improvement.
  • Experience specifying requirements for and managing the delivery of safety-related projects.
  • Project management experience, including work planning and budget management.
  • Chartered Engineer/Physicistor equivalent professional status.
  • Knowledge and understanding of reactor physics software.
