About the Opportunity:

About IA&R (Independent Assurance and Regulation)

IA&R provides risk based, proportionate, independent oversight and assurance to the defence and civil nuclear industry. In addition, we identify, define and execute programmes of Research and Technology to support some of the world’s most complex engineering challenges, including the UK Naval Nuclear Propulsion Programme (NNPP).

About the Role

Our dynamic, customer facing Independent Nuclear Assurance (INA) team has been supporting the NNPP for over sixty years. We pride ourselves on being a customer friend with a proven track record of providing authoritative and pragmatic nuclear safety and technical advice. An opportunity has arisen to join this diverse team of highly experienced staff who provide a key role in supporting the safe operation of the UK's submarine fleet.

As a Nuclear Technical Engineer, you will help deliver independent assurance services to the MoD. This includes the provision of safety and technical advice for both current and future submarine Naval Reactor Plants (NRP). This involves working collaboratively with specialists from a wide range of technical disciplines, internal to Amentum, MoD and their contractors, to provide balanced, proportionate and timely support to ensure nuclear risks are identified, assessed and appropriately managed.

We are seeking personnel who are passionate about nuclear safety and technology and a desire to work in support of these complex and challenging projects which are vital to the UK’s defence strategy. This work requires a general knowledge of the design and operation of the NRP, nuclear safety case development and methodologies, and the ability to communicate effectively. We are particularly interested in individuals with an aptitude and enthusiasm for core materials, structural performance of systems/components and EC&I to complement our existing team.

We are able to provide comprehensive training across a range of technical areas to support personal development. Therefore, if you feel you meet most but not all of the requirements or work in civil nuclear/high hazard industries and are keen to take on a new challenge, we would like to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

  • Providing authoritative advice to MoD through safety and technical assessments.

  • Supporting collaborative meetings with MoD and their contractors.

  • Co-ordinating advice/output across a range of relevant technical disciplines.

  • Working according to the best applicable safety, technical and regulatory standards to support agreed programmes.

  • Working in accordance with business requirements for health, safety, environment, and security, as well as seeking continuous improvements in all aspects of work.

Here’s What You’ll Need

  • Degree (Level 6) in Science or Engineering (or equivalent).

  • Membership of (or working towards) a professional institution is desirable.

  • Knowledge or operational experience of the Naval Reactor Plant is desirable.

  • Knowledge of safety cases (structures and function).

  • Familiarity with related documentation (NRPA NSMAs, DSA02-DNSR, ONR SAPs etc).

  • Clear, concise technical writing and communication skills.

Our Culture:
