Job description

The Nuclear Medicine department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (NNUH), currently QSI accredited, is looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic Apprentice Nuclear Medicine Technologist to join our multi-disciplinary team. The successful candidate will work alongside Radiographers/Technologists, Nursing Staff, Admin Staff, Clinical Scientists, and Radiology Consultants, demonstrating the NNUH PRIDE values.

The department features three state-of-the-art Symbia Intevo Bold SPECT/CT scanners. It performs approximately 7,500 examinations annually, offering a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine imaging and procedures for patients across Norfolk and Suffolk. NNUH is centrally located in Norfolk, near the Norfolk Broads and beaches, close to Norwich city.

The trainee will have the opportunity to commence the position prior to studying a fully funded 3-year BSc (Hons) in Healthcare Science apprenticeship at the University of West England (UWE). This degree apprenticeship is designed for healthcare workers aiming to develop in medical physics and specialise in Nuclear Medicine.

Full-time hours: 37.5 per week

Main duties of the job
  • A relevant Level 3 qualification is required to apply for the degree apprenticeship.
  • All apprentices must have English and Mathematics qualifications equivalent to GCSE Grade C or above. Those without these qualifications must achieve them within the first year of their degree.
  • The apprenticeship will enable completion of a 3-year BSc (Hons) in Medical Physics (Nuclear Medicine) at UWE Bristol, combining face-to-face, work-based, and online learning, including three 5-day blocks at UWE each year and a weekly study day.
  • Upon successful completion, qualifications, and registration with the RCT, the postholder’s grade will be uplifted to Band 5 Nuclear Medicine Technologist.

Job responsibilities
  • Participate in daily quality control of gamma cameras and nuclear medicine equipment.
  • Perform nuclear medicine scans and procedures under supervision.
  • Process images according to SOPs and maintain high standards of appearance and hygiene.
  • Communicate effectively with patients and staff to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Engage in professional development, mandatory training, and appraisals.
  • Report incidents and liaise with department leads regarding equipment maintenance.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 96 UCAS points (CCC) including one relevant STEM subject at 32 points/Grade C or higher.
  • Relevant qualifications include Biology, Applied Biology, Human Biology, Health and Social Care, Mathematics, Physical Education, Applied Science, Science in Society, Sport and Physical Education, Sports Studies.
  • Alternatively, T Levels in Healthcare Science or Science, BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science, BTEC National Extended Diploma (MMM), or Access to Higher Education Diploma with STEM credits.
  • English and Maths GCSE grade 4/C or above or equivalent.
  • Available to start in September 2025; if lacking Level 3 qualification, must be completing it by summer 2025.
Experience and Skills
  • Some healthcare experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Nuclear Medicine is advantageous.
  • Good organisational skills and adaptability.
