Job overview

To lead the clinical team performing diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures, providing a high quality nuclear medicine service to patients referred by medical practitioners within the NHS Trusts in Dorset.

Further duties include appointment as Radiation Protection Supervisor for Nuclear Medicine; supervision of staff rotas and clinical workloads; maintaining required statutory records; supervision and teaching of staff and students; performing routine and non‑routine nuclear medicine clinical procedures, both diagnostic and therapeutic; providing clinical reports for certain procedures; performing routine quality control procedures on complex equipment; and participating in evidence‑based audit, research and service development projects.

Main duties of the job
  • To perform all aspects of diagnostic nuclear medicine procedures.
  • Plan, consent and deliver therapeutic doses of radiopharmaceuticals as prescribed by consultant oncologists.
  • Lead the nuclear medicine team to achieve the effective and efficient daily management of a caseload of patients including responding to urgent referrals, prioritising clinical work and balancing other patient related and professional activities in accordance with departmental standards. Organise the daily workload and the staff needed to work in specific areas to ensure the smooth running of the Nuclear Medicine service, this includes the formation of the staff roster on a daily and weekly basis and also includes e‑roster allocation.
  • Monitor referrals and liaise with administrative staff, other hospital departments and referrers to ensure smooth running of nuclear medicine clinics and to keep waiting times at an acceptable level. This will also include weekly monitoring of the reporting, scheduled and unscheduled waiting times data produced by the radiology IT team in liaison with the Nuclear Medicine head of department.
  • Communicate effectively with other hospital staff, both medical and non‑medical, regarding nuclear medicine referrals and developments in the Nuclear Medicine service. This can involve giving advice about suitability of imaging procedures and patient care and attendance at MDTs.
  • Report to and liaise with the Head of Nuclear Medicine at regular intervals with timely and effective communication on all professional matters including the reporting of all complaints and incidents.

Practice relevant radiation protection principles for the protection of patients, other people, staff and the environment, and ensure all other staff in nuclear medicine do likewise. Person specification Qualifications Essential criteria Radiography degree in diagnostic imaging or Technologist degree in Nuclear Medicine.

Registered as a Radiographer with HCPC or as Technologist with equivalent registration body. Desirable criteria Management qualification or significant training.

Post graduate qualification cardiac reporting and associated clinical competency sign off. Experience Essential criteria Extensive experience in clinical diagnostic Nuclear Medicine.

Involvement in cardiac stressing clinics.

Quality assurance of equipment and related procedures.

Significant experience in clinical therapeutic Nuclear Medicine. Desirable criteria Experience of reporting cardiac and / or other diagnostic Nuclear Medicine studies.

Ability to manage and deliver to deadlines and within available resources. Knowledge Essential criteria Advanced level of understanding of diagnostic Nuclear Medicine related radiation protection policies and procedures.

Advanced level of understanding of the radiation protection measures relating to therapeutic Nuclear Medicine.

Sound understanding of legislation relating to Health and Safety, Radiation Protection and Radioactive Substances. Technical Skills Competencies Essential criteria Safe administration of radioactive medicines intravenously, subcutaneously and orally.

Able to demonstrate problem solving and prioritising abilities and complete projects to a satisfactory conclusion.

Ability to communicate complex information to a wide range of professionals, patients and members of the general public with differing levels of understanding.
