Job Overview

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, motivated, full time Band 6 radiographer or technologist to join our busy, friendly Nuclear Medicine team at North Bristol NHS Trust (NBT). We provide a comprehensive Nuclear Medicine service to a wide range of specialities within the hospital, including examinations such as melanoma and penile scintigraphy, breast SNL procedures, lung scans, renal studies, cardiac and brain imaging.

Normal working hours are 9-5 Monday to Friday and occasional Saturday working; however, we are considering the possibility of extended day working. Full time hours would be preferred but part time and flexible working would also be considered. Participation in weekend SeHCAT cover and occasional late shifts may be required pending clinical demand.

Candidates must hold Post-graduate Diploma in Nuclear Medicine or equivalent and a BSc Radiography or equivalent. Radiographers must also have a current Health Professions Council (HCPC) registration and technologists must be willing to submit their application for the Register for Clinical Technologists while in post (if not registered yet).

Main duties of the job

This imaging role would be suitable for those that wish to develop their Nuclear Medicine expertise and practical knowledge of the modality. You would become a vital part of our dedicated team, performing a wide range of Nuclear Medicine procedures, from patient preparation to image processing and reconstruction.

The post holder will be required to provide professional support to a multidisciplinary team that is passionate about high quality care and service delivery. We would support you in your local training and help you building up your skills, particularly if you are stepping up from a Band 5 role. You will be carrying out all relevant practical aspects required to obtain high-quality imaging and act as a point of specialist advice for a range of clinical staff, patients, and carers.

NBT is a centre for specialist health services for major trauma, neurosciences, vascular, plastics and burns, orthopaedics and renal services and is also a prestigious, internationally recognised teaching and research organisation providing care regionally and nationally. In 2014 the Trust relocated the majority of its acute services to the Brunel Building, one of the most advanced hospitals in Europe offering exemplary care in a beautiful and purpose-built environment. Following a CQC inspection in 2019, the Trust has obtained a “Good” rating overall, with “Outstanding” ratings for both “Caring” and “Well-led”.

You would be working for the largest NHS Trust in the South West Region providing outstanding medical, surgical and maternity care for a population of approximately half a million people in North Bristol and the surrounding community. With a turnover of £550m and 9000 staff, our clinical teams have built a strong reputation for excellent healthcare. The Nuclear Medicine team carries out approximately 6500 examinations per year. Our current equipment includes a dedicated cardiac camera and 2 dual head gamma-cameras, one with SPECT/CT. In 2020 and 2021, the Nuclear Medicine department was awarded a Green Impact award for improving environmental / sustainability practices.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • Perform complex unsupervised examinations relevant to their level of training and experience.
  • Process and manipulate complex image data.
  • Work within departmental teams with guidance from Superintendents and their deputies.
  • Spend sufficient time in Nuclear Medicine to retain level of competence.
  • Follow safe system of work for the safe receipt, administration, disposal and transportation of Radiopharmaceuticals and decontamination due to radioactive spills.
  • Keep accurate records of the administration and safe disposal of Radiopharmaceuticals.
  • Administer IV or oral Radiopharmaceuticals, contrast or other approved pharmaceuticals as required.
  • Assess requests for pre-examination prescribed medication and take appropriate action.
  • Assess Nuclear Medicine scans for further imaging requirements.
  • Perform and assess quality control tests on Nuclear Medicine equipment as per departmental protocols.
  • Active participation in multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Provide practice education for undergraduate and postgraduate students and Medical staff.
  • Provide education and support to other staff specifically in Nuclear Medicine.
  • Provide an imaging service outside the department, in Theatre, wards, clinics and other departments.
  • General first line supervisory Radiographic duties.
  • Take short-term operational responsibility for the running of the Nuclear Medicine departments in the absence of Lead Radiographer and Section Superintendents.
  • Assess and react to the needs and safety of patients at all times, to the highest possible professional standards.
  • Collaborate with Radiologists, Departmental Superintendents, peers and less experienced staff. Delegate, schedule and carry out Nuclear Medicine, Radiographic examinations and other specialised techniques.
  • Liaise with Nursing, Clerical and Portering staff within the department and with Nursing, Medical and hospital staff of other wards and departments to ensure a smooth, efficient service to department users.
  • Communicate detailed information clearly and effectively. Recognise and overcome barriers to communication.

  • Achieved grade/post grad in Nuclear Medicine or equivalent

Desirable criteria

  • HCPC or RCT Registered
  • NM experience (ideally 2y+)
  • NHS experience (ideally 2y+)
