Job summary

ALTEN is a global engineering and technology consultancy seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to own engineering activities from concept to detailed design and manufacture. Remote-friendly with extensive travel across the UK to Nuclear sites and to France, requiring strong SolidWorks expertise and fluent French and English.

The role emphasizes producing robust engineering solutions, supporting project delivery and bids, and contributing to technical governance within highly regulated sectors.

Qualifications

• 5-9 years of professional experience in mechanical design engineering.
• Fluent in both French and English.
• Strong experience using SolidWorks for 3D design and detailed manufacturing drawings.
• Experience producing engineering calculations and design substantiation.
• Ability to interpret technical specifications and translate requirements into practical engineering solutions.
• Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
• Experience managing engineering work packages or projects.

Responsibilities

• Produce engineering designs and associated technical documentation.
• Develop concept designs, full 3D scheme designs, and detailed manufacturing drawings using SolidWorks.
• Produce engineering substantiation through hand calculations.
• Review and verify engineering designs to ensure technical compliance and quality.
• Conduct peer reviews of concept designs, CAD models, manufacturing drawings, and engineering calculations.
• Deliver engineering activities in line with project schedules and technical requirements.
• Manage the day-to-day technical delivery of allocated projects.
• Work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating closely with senior engineering leadership.
• Coordinate engineering activities and support the task management of assigned engineers.
• Ensure technical deliverables are completed to the required quality, cost, and schedule targets.
• Support the Commercial team with technical input for bids and proposals.
• Review and interpret customer technical specifications.
• Produce technical responses and develop accurate engineering estimates for tender submissions.
• Support the development of engineering capability across the business.
• Contribute to internship, graduate, and apprenticeship programmes.
• Promote engineering best practices, innovation, and continuous improvement initiatives.
