Job summary

A defense contracting company is seeking an Engineer to support shock and vibration qualification for DDG-51 class equipment. The ideal candidate will have a BS in Mechanical or Marine Engineering and relevant experience ranging from entry-level to extensive. Responsibilities include reviewing procedures, testing support, and technical documentation. This role may involve travel to testing sites and requires the ability to obtain a DoD clearance.

Qualifications

  • 0-1 years' experience for Engineer I, 1-3 years' for Engineer II, 3+ years' for Engineer III.
  • Willing to travel for shock tests at lab facilities.
  • Ability to access government facilities and obtain DoD secret clearance.

Overview

In this role as an Engineer in the NSV group, operating under the Bath Iron Works Business Operating System (BOS), you will support advanced shock and vibration qualification requirements for DDG-51 class equipment, with specific emphasis on production support. Responsible for all aspects of qualification, including review/approval of procedures, reports, similar extensions, preparation of technical submittals to the Navy and attending shock tests.

Safety
  • Be able to understand and demonstrate BIW safety policies and procedures in Main Yard operations.
  • Promote a culture of proactive safety awareness and accountability across the team.
  • Ensure safe workplace conditions and compliance with government and company safety standards.
Continuous Improvement
  • Champion BOS principles and productivity enhancements.
  • Identify and eliminate non-value-added activities and elevate these to team leadership.
  • Leverage A3 problem-solving and other structured improvement tools.
Team Collaboration and Communication
  • Support noise and vibration testing on DDG 51 Class ships. Conduct airborne noise analysis to support design requirements for acoustic insulation to meet compartment airborne noise requirements. Conduct machinery vibration analysis on shipboard equipment and recommend corrective action on equipment exceeding specification requirements.
  • Develop internal process procedures and internal departmental standards in support of DDG Shock Program Requirements.
  • Calculate shock excursion envelopes for shock isolated equipment
  • Participate in shipboard shock and sound short inspections
  • Provide technical support to Manufacturing for the resolution of issues relating to shock requirements
  • Support new manufacturing process initiatives, particularly in the area of shock and noise qualification
  • Support NSV training initiatives for production and engineering personnel
  • Routinely interfacing with manufacturing personnel on the deck plates to provide guidance as necessary.
  • Participate in or lead technical interchanges on issues with customers such as U. S. Navy (NAVSEA and Supervisor of Shipbuilding), or others as required.
