Salary: Circa £48k* + 10% Recruitment Payment

Hours: Full Time or part time hours available
Contract: Various available - Permanent/Fixed Term/Temporary
Location: Hybrid – Work from home and/or one of our offices in Selby, Richmond, Scarborough, Malton, Northallerton, Skipton, or Harrogate. Occasional attendance at our Head Office in Easingwold is expected.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Building Control Surveyor to join North Yorkshire Councils Building Control team. You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of building control in North Yorkshire.

Responsibilities

What You’ll Do

  • Manage complex Building Regulation applications under the Building Act 1984, ensuring compliance across safety, sustainability, and accessibility standards.
  • Oversee investigations into dangerous structures and demolition notifications, ensuring public safety.
  • Support and lead enforcement actions to uphold the Council’s statutory responsibilities.
  • Contribute to mentoring and development of junior surveyors and help shape service delivery as we continue to modernise.
  • Represent the service professionally with developers, architects, and residents, building trust and adding value.

Whether you’re already Class 2 registered with the Building Safety Regulator, or are actively working towards it, we want to hear from you.

What You’ll Bring

  • In-depth technical knowledge of Building Regulations and associated legislation.
  • Confidence in managing higher-risk, complex developments and making informed, balanced decisions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to provide clear technical advice to a wide range of stakeholders.

Essential Qualifications:

  • Educated to degree level in a relevant subject such as Building Control, Building Surveying, Construction, Structural Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Registered with the Building Safety Regulator to at least Class 2: Building Inspector as determined by the HSE Building Inspector Competency Framework (BICoF).

Professional Membership:

Corporate Member of a relevant professional body such as RICS, CABE, CIOB, or equivalent.
