Job overview

East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust has an exciting opportunity for a dedicated individual to take on the role of non-medical prescribing and medicines safety and optimisation specialist for the Trust. The post holder will be detrimental to the management of all new and existing non-medical prescribers within the organisation, in addition to overseeing the development and review of mechanisms of medicines supply and administration to patients (e.g. Patient Group Directions).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will:

  • Work in collaboration with the Pharmacy Directorate and other relevant Trust personnel to provide a consistently high level of safe and effective management of medicines in line with corporate objectives and government initiatives.
  • Act as the nominated lead in the Trust for non-medical prescribing, and in this capacity spread the utilisation of non-medical prescribing for the benefit of patients to achieve safe, personal and effective care and provide professional leadership to the Trusts non-medical prescribers.
  • Lead on the development, management and oversight of Patient Group Directions (PGDs), Medicine Policies and Procedures to ensure appropriate medicines mechanisms are in place that facilitate legal, safe and effective administration and/or supply of medicinal products (which may include medical devices and medical gases), and the assurance processes associated with these.
  • Provide expert information and advice about medicines optimisation to nursing, allied healthcare professionals and non-registered staff in the Trust and local area to ensure safe and effective administration or supply of medications to facilitate positive patient outcomes.
  • Represent the Trust and participate in relevant local, regional and national sector wide forums related to non-medical prescribing and medicines optimisation.

Qualifications
  • Current professional registration with either: Nursing and Midwifery Council(NMC), Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) or General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC)
  • Masters degree or equivalent
  • Evidence of postgraduate qualification or equivalent
  • Qualified independent prescriber or equivalent
  • Post graduate teaching qualification or equivalent
  • Leadership qualification or equivalent
Experience
  • Experience of working as an independent supplementary prescriber
  • Experience and a working understanding of prescribing and other mechanisms of medicines administration/supply
  • Evidence of multi-disciplinary and/or multi-agency working
  • Experience of developing and implementing policies and procedures
  • Experience of managing change
Knowledge
  • Specialist knowledge of non-medical prescribing
  • Ability to plan, organise and communicate educational and practice information at training events/presentations
  • Working knowledge and understanding of local and national NHS and Medicines Optimisation agenda
  • Understanding of clinical governance principles
