Job summary

Rolls-Royce in Derby invites applications for a Noise Aerothermal Engineer to join the Mechanical Systems team. You will predict noise for future and in-service engines, validate designs via tests, and support certification with rig and engine testing.

You will drive technology programs to reduce noise, liaise with suppliers and airframe customers, and contribute to a high-performance aerospace culture through rigorous analysis.

Qualifications

  • MEng in Mechanical, Aeronautical Engineering or relevant Science or Maths degree.
  • Aeroacoustics, gas turbine cycle design or aero-thermal/aerodynamics experience required.
  • Gas Turbine full Engine or rig testing and analysis experience is desirable.
  • Ability to apply logical and analytical thinking and communicate ideas effectively.
  • Proactive, persistent and customer focused with self-motivation.
  • Strong project management and planning skills for urgent and long-term work.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills for liaising with airframe customers and leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Provide design advice to meet noise requirements.
  • Estimate noise performance of new or in-service engines to tight timelines and standards.
  • Liaise with programme leadership and external partners on Noise Engineering.
  • Manage experimental activities and evaluate relevant acoustic data.
  • Lead R&T programs to generate low-noise technology.
  • Collaborate with partners and academia on noise capability strategy.

A Noise Engineer is responsible for all aspects of engine noise to support Rolls-Royce's Civil Aerospace businesses. Activities encompass the acoustic prediction of components for future engines and in-service products within the engine and nacelle. It includes verification and validation of engine and component designs via analysis and rig or engine testing, and support of Aircraft Certification of future and in-service products via static and flight noise testing.

The role also includes the definition and execution of technology acquisition programmes to deliver novel technology and concepts for noise reduction. In pursuing this work, you will work closely with various engineering functions, suppliers, marketing and airframe companies in order to meet technically challenging requirements, within demanding timescales.

Responsibilities
  • The provision of component design advice to meet noise requirements
  • The estimation of the noise performance of new or in-service engines, often to short timescales and to commercial guarantee or certification standards
  • Liaison with programme leadership, internal supply chain units, external customers, partners and suppliers, representing Noise Engineering
  • The management of experimental activities, including the acquisition and appraisal of relevant rig & engine acoustic data
  • The execution and leadership of research and technology programmes aimed at generating low noise technology
  • Working with partners and academia to contribute to the Noise Capability strategy and create and develop new method
Qualifications and skills required:
  • MEng in Mechanical, Aeronautical Engineering or relevant Science or Maths degree
  • To be able to contribute from day one previous aeroacoustics, gas turbine cycle design experience, aero-thermal or aerodynamics technical experience is required
  • Previous experience in Gas Turbine full Engine or rig testing and analysis is highly desirable.
  • An ability to apply logical and analytical thinking on a range of technical problems and be able to communicate ideas effectively
  • Proactive, persistent and customer focused with a high level of self-motivation and initiative.
  • Strong Project management and planning skills - capable of responding quickly to urgent requests from customers in addition to longer term planning and technical activities
  • Effective interpersonal & communication skills essential for liaising with and influencing Airframe customers, Project leadership and the large number of interfaces that exist with this role
