The role is based in our Farringdon office, and is an excellent opportunity for someone with a sharp news sense, excellent editorial judgment, and a deep understanding of UK and global current affairs.

  • Commission and edit sharp, well-informed news and analysis pieces from staff writers and contributors.
  • Oversee the work of a small team of reporters and digital writers, supporting their development and ensuring high editorial standards.
  • Oversee the daily publishing schedule, ensuring the homepage and key landing pages are current, engaging and aligned with editorial priorities.
  • Collaborate closely with other editors across politics, international, culture and data to amplify the reach and impact of our journalism.
  • Work with colleagues to optimise stories for SEO, social, and newsletters, and use analytics to inform editorial decisions.
  • Act as a guardian of the New Statesman’s editorial tone, accuracy and integrity, especially in fast-moving news environments.
  • Represent the New Statesman at events, panels or media appearances where appropriate.

Skills and experience

  • Proven experience as a news editor or senior digital journalist, ideally within a high-quality newsroom.
  • Demonstrated ability to spot important developments and produce authoritative, well-packaged coverage under pressure.
  • Proven ability to delegate effectively and ensure delivery through a pool of staff writers.
  • Excellent editing and commissioning abilities, with attention to style, accuracy and tone.
  • Strong digital acumen, including familiarity with SEO, analytics tools and CMS platforms.
  • A deep understanding of UK politics and public policy, and ideally a good grasp of international affairs and culture.
  • Highly organised with a collaborative, solutions-oriented mindset.

Company benefits

  • Additional days off for your birthday, health and well-being day and volunteering day
  • Subscription to group publications and all other online content
  • Access to a discounted shopping program
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Enhanced maternity, paternity and adoption pay
  • Enhanced company sick pay after probation
