Job summary

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust’s Wexham Park Hospital is seeking a Newborn Hearing Screener on a part-time basis (15 hours per week). You will join the hearing screening team to perform newborn hearing screening on the postnatal ward, neonatal unit and in community clinics as needed.

The role involves handling newborns, communicating with parents, and recording clinical/test data. A hearing screening qualification is required; further training will be provided if needed.

Qualifications

• Hearing diploma/qualification
• Evidence of general education, GCSEs or equivalent including Maths and English
• Excellent IT skills
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Knowledge of care and related hearing screening procedures

Responsibilities

• To work as a member of the hearing screening team, participating in the hearing screening of newborn babies under the supervision of the senior screener.
• To directly handle newborn babies and have contact with parents and be involved in gathering and accurately recording clinical and test data relevant to the hearing screening process.
• To be part of a dedicated team of screeners ensuring a quality service is delivered for the whole of the residential population of Frimley Health. Hearing screeners will be site specific to Wexham Park Hospital.
• To undertake hearing screening both within the hospital setting and community midwifery hubs within designated hearing clinics.
• The post holder must be able to supplement work study in their own time in order to successfully achieve the Diploma in Health Screening (if not already holding relevant qualification).
• Be responsible for the preparation of hearing screening sessions, including equipment set-up, instrument checks and patient preparation.
• Carry out the hearing screening of newborns using the AABR (Automated Auditory Brainstem Response) and AOAE (Otoacoustic Emissions) in maternity departments, community clinics and occasionally parents’ homes, ensuring an accurate record of clinical and test data, both written and electronically, taking responsibility for data from tests.
• Refer babies to local audiology services in a timely manner using local processes and procedures.
