A leading program offers the opportunity for passionate individuals to become New Producers, engaging with host organisations to produce film events in Scotland. Training and support will provide opportunities to learn various aspects of programming, marketing, and event delivery, aiming to increase skills and insights into the film exhibition sector.

Applications are now open for the next round of New Producers, Film Hub Scotland’s training programme for people who’d like to better understand how to produce film events for audiences in Scotland.
The New Producers programme aims to provide a paid placement opportunity to work for a cinema or festival in Scotland. There are four roles available for individuals to create and produce film screening activity for an established film organisation. New Producers will be supported with training and will work closely with their Host organisation to learn all aspects of programming, marketing and delivering film screenings.
This is the sixth edition of the programme, which 24 participants have successfully undertaken to date. Read about the 2023-24 cohort and events from the 2024-25 cohort .
The programme offers a placement of four months, based at a host organisation. Placements are offered part-time at the real living wage of £12.60 per hour to £13.85 per hour, depending on the organisation. In a supportive environment, the New Producers will develop skills in event production including marketing, negotiations, fundraising and curation to deliver their own events within Macrobert Arts Centre, Scottish Documentary Institute (SDI), Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival (SMHAF), and North East Arts Touring (NEAT)’s current events delivery model.
They’ll also participate in training sessions with industry professionals, meet with others on the scheme, and gain insights into programming, audience development with accessible engagement, event marketing, and career progression.
The New Producers will play an active role in programming, producing and delivering at least three film screenings and events with Macrobert Arts Centre, Scottish Documentary Institute (SDI), Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival (SMHAF), and North East Arts Touring (NEAT).They will be expected to participate in internal meetings, take part in scheme-wide learning sessions, and deliver their events in line with the host organisation’s delivery model.
Film Hub Scotland and participating organisations are looking for individuals who are passionate about film and curious about how the film exhibition sector in Scotland works. While previous experience in film or events is not required, any involvement in creative, community, or cultural projects –whether paid or voluntary – will be helpful. An awareness of different audiences and an interest in engaging diverse communities is a plus.
You should have good communication and organisational skills, be eager to learn, and enjoy working both independently and as part of a team. Creativity, attention to detail, and a willingness to try new things are also valuable. Formal film training or experience is not necessary, as all participants will be supported through on-the-job learning and training sessions.
There are no specific academic qualifications required. Applicants from all educational backgrounds are welcomed and we are particularly keen to hear from those who have faced barriers to entering the film exhibition industry. You don’t need any previous film experience, just a passion for cinema and an interest in working in the industry.
