Job summary

UK Atomic Energy Authority is seeking a Neutron and Gamma Assistant Diagnostic Physicist at Culham, Abingdon. The role involves supporting diagnostics for plasma research, with a mix of operation, calibration, and data analysis responsibilities.

The position is based on-site three days a week with flexible working options and a two-year fixed-term appointment. Salary is £38,500 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance), with an excellent pension and relocation possibilities.

Qualifications

• Degree or PhD in a relevant scientific/engineering field or equivalent industrial experience.
• Experience operating diagnostic hardware and collecting physics data.
• Ability to analyze experimental data and perform error analysis.
• Ability to conduct physics research as part of a team.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Responsibilities

• Support routine operation of neutron and gamma diagnostics (Fission Chamber, Neutron Camera, HXD, Reciprocating Probe).
• Ensure diagnostics follow safety rules and commissioning procedures.
• Calibrate diagnostics and maintain calibration procedures.
• Contribute to refurbishment designs for physics studies.
• Support maintenance of inter-shot analysis codes for data.
