Location: We currently have vacancies for our Network Operation Technicians to join Customer Field Services department to cover the following areas: in South Yorkshire including Barnsley, Sheffield, Rotherham, Chesterfield and Doncaster. Applicants should live within a reasonable commuting distance to our Blackburn Meadows and Thorne wastewater site and be a part of helping Yorkshire Water to provide the best service to our customers.

Work type: The permanent opportunities are working 37-hour work patterns Monday to Friday (plus standby) or rotational 40-hour work patterns on a 4 on 4 off basis (no standby included), which may include late, early and weekend work patterns.

Where you fit in

As our Network Operation Technician, you will deliver a first-time fix and same-day solution to customer and environmental problems and deliver the asset plan for network maintenance to eliminate escapes. You will work in a geographical field team to improve customer service and waste network performance, ensuring a first-time fix and quality follow-on work in line with standards and specifications.

You will ensure proper site set up and POWRA are completed prior and during jobs to identify risks and undertake corrective and preventive activity to stay safe at all times.

To safely proactively and reactively maintain the sewerage network to resolve and prevent sewage escapes, floods or pollution from occurring, and to ensure no repeats take place.

You will work closely with other Yorkshire Water teams and contracted partners on site to resolve and manage operational issues on the sewer network.

Requirement to operate different vehicle types to complete work, dependent on vehicle availability and job type.

You will undertake thorough investigations on our sewerage system to resolve issues and prevent repeat customer contacts and support other operational teams with investigations into sewer asset problems.

You will need to utilise IT systems to collate information and relay feedback. You will also be required to collate data and information for evidence capturing, including assessing photographs, plans and reporting on any escape/issues from the sewer network.

You may be required to maintain and install Customer Sewer Alarms on the network and work with third-party providers where support is required.

You will ensure Health and Safety working practices are always complied with. You will provide technical support and first-line response to customer contacts to ensure a fix-first-time resolution and promote the most cost-effective solution.

What skills & qualifications you will need

Essential

  • It is essential that you have a practical mindset, enjoy working outdoors in all weathers and are comfortable taking a hands-on approach to work tasks.
  • Previous experience in a customer service-related role with face-to-face communication with customers is an essential requirement.
  • The ability to develop and maintain effective internal and external working relationships and to influence outcomes and decisions.
  • Be prepared to question unsafe working practices and report them to management.
  • Excellent communication skills to capture, evidence and feedback information; ability to influence outcomes and deliver against challenging targets.
  • Ability to find faults and diagnose root causes; rational problem-solving skills.
  • Basic IT skills and ability to use internal IT systems to capture necessary site information.
  • Willingness to work a variety of rotas and participate in out-of-hours standby when fully trained.
  • Willingness to work in confined spaces and pass medical criteria including BMI, vision, blood pressure, hearing, and spirometry tests for safety.
  • Full valid driving licence (no more than 6 points).

You will also benefit from having

  • Understanding of the sewerage system and performance issues.
  • Competent in the use of IT systems applicable to Yorkshire Water.
  • Experience in the water or wastewater sectors or utilities, process or manufacturing sectors; understanding of drainage and sewerage systems is beneficial.
