Job summary

Portsmouth Water is seeking a Network Flushing Operative to proactively flush the distribution network and identify maintenance needs, while following PW procedures. You will work outdoors, handle customer queries calmly, and collaborate with other departments and external partners to resolve network issues.

A positive, proactive attitude and strong communication are essential; a driving licence and willingness to work out of hours may be required.

Responsibilities

Adhere to Health and Safety policies and procedures.
Provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
Ensure network operations align with PW policies and RAMS.
Communicate effectively with customers and colleagues in the field.
Follow risk assessments and COSHH guidelines in PW standards.
Coordinate with other departments and external partners to resolve issues.
Occasionally work out of hours to begin flushing when conditions permit.

In this role, you will be responsible for effectively flushing the distribution network and identifying maintenance needs, all while ensuring that activities are aligned with PW’s operating procedures. You will also ensure that all company and regulatory standards are consistently followed.

With a positive, proactive attitude, you will confidently manage queries in a calm and thoughtful manner. You’ll enjoy working in a supportive team environment, with the opportunity to work outdoors and tackle new challenges each day. Your efforts will play a key role in providing a vital service to our customers. You’ll also work closely with other departments and external partners to resolve network and customer concerns. What will you be doing?

Adhere to all Health and Safety policies and procedures.
Provide exceptional customer service when interacting with both internal and external customers.
Ensure that all network operations are conducted thoughtfully, with careful planning and consideration.
Complete all operations in line with relevant PW policies, procedures, and RAMS (Risk Assessment and Method Statements).
Perform field activities with effective customer communication, ensuring all relevant information is accurately processed and returned.
Follow department‑specific risk and COSHH assessments in line with PW standards.
Assist in the timely, proactive, and reactive communications with both customers and internal departments.
Ensure all face‑to‑face customer interactions are handled with grace and professionalism, maintaining high standards of customer service throughout.
Participate in out of hours work as required, with the flexibility to begin flushing operations when network conditions permit.

What do you need?

Ability to work gracefully under pressure, balancing varying priorities.
Exceptional time management skills to ensure timely completion of tasks.
Strong communication skills, with the ability to connect confidently at all levels.
Proven ability to network and build strong, lasting relationships with both internal and external stakeholders.
A thorough understanding of all field activities and operations.
Water hygiene certification is desirable.
NRSWA qualification is also desirable.

The successful applicant will be required to have a full UK manual car driving licence (Class B), will have to undergo a driving assessment, consent to ongoing driving licence checks and additionally any other safety measures deemed necessary by Portsmouth Water Ltd in connection with driving.
