Neonatal Sister/Charge Nurse

Position: Neonatal Sister/Charge Nurse, Band 6

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Swindon is leading the award-winning PERIPrem (Perinatal Excellence to Reduce Injury in Premature Birth) quality improvement project, recognized regionally and nationally.

If you wish to be part of this exciting Perinatal team, we have a fantastic opportunity for a Band 6 Neonatal Nurse.

Main duties of the job

We offer numerous professional development opportunities for Neonatal Nurses to enhance skills in leadership areas such as quality improvement, research, outreach, transitional care, family integrated care, BFI, palliative care/bereavement, education and training (including 4 NLS courses annually in Swindon), risk management, and governance.

Our unit is a local neonatal unit (LNU) within the South West ODN, handling approximately 5,000 deliveries annually, with around 10% born prematurely.

We are part of the Maternity and Neonatal services, fostering close multidisciplinary collaboration with midwifery and obstetric teams.

Job responsibilities

We seek enthusiastic, forward-thinking, compassionate, and caring Neonatal Nurses to join our innovative team. Band 6 sisters typically run the unit as supernumerary shift coordinators, leading the nursing team and ensuring that babies and their parents remain at the heart of our care. They uphold standards and serve as role models to maintain high-quality care across the multidisciplinary team.

Qualifications
  • Current NMC Registration
  • FLAP or equivalent
  • Specialty qualification
  • NALS
  • Degree or equivalent training and experience (e.g., RCN Diploma in Child Health or RGN)
  • Level 3 safeguarding children
Experience
  • Mentorship experience within a neonatal setting
  • Competence in neonatal care from special care to intensive care
  • Experience working in a neonatal unit
  • Participation in audit and research activities
Knowledge
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage operational issues
  • Reflective practice and development of personal and unit initiatives
  • Understanding of clinical supervision and effective child protection and safeguarding practices
  • Knowledge of neonatal and paediatric conditions and audit tools for good practice
