Job description

At Berneslai Homes, we strive to be an ambitious, forward-thinking social housing provider and employer. Working for us offers you a chance to play a real part in improving homes and communities throughout Barnsley.

Managing around 18,000 homes on behalf of Barnsley Council, our 3 Cs values are at the heart of all we do: we promise to always put the Customer first, have a Can do attitude to make change happen, and stay Curious to ensure we get things right.

We are proud to announce that we are the first local authority to achieve the highest C1 grading from the Regulator of Social Housing following our recent inspection. This outcome means that we meet consumer standards as a landlord, identify issues promptly, and implement plans to prevent recurrence, demonstrating our commitment to providing high-quality homes and prioritising tenant safety, needs, and well-being.

The Neighbourhood Officer/Assistant role:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Neighbourhood service as Neighbourhood Officer!

As part of this key front-line role, you will deliver a proactive, practical, and visible customer-focused tenancy and estate management service, making a real difference to our customers and communities. We also have opportunities for Neighbourhood Assistants to join our team.

Key duties and responsibilities of our Neighbourhood Officer:

  • Deliver a highly visible, proactive tenancy and neighbourhood management service.
  • Deal with or escalate all breaches of tenancy regulations promptly and in line with thresholds and procedures, including Anti-Social Behaviour, using support or enforcement interventions as required.
  • Manage the day-to-day patch-based void properties and work with partners to ensure properties are let quickly to meet performance targets.
  • Conduct welcome visits to new tenants within agreed timescales, communicating obligations, offering support and advice, and signposting services.
  • Identify customer vulnerabilities and safeguarding concerns through support checklists, risk assessments, and appropriate interventions at sign-up or when issues arise.
  • Work with the Lettings Service to assess applications to the Housing Waiting List and ensure effective operation of the Lettings Policy for optimal use of housing stock.
  • Provide low-level support and make referrals to internal or external support services under the guidance of the Neighbourhood Team Leader.

What we’re looking for in our Neighbourhood Officer:

  • NVQ Level 3 / BTEC National Certificate or equivalent, or relevant experience and transferable skills.
  • Effective communication skills with residents and colleagues.
  • Experience in social housing, estate management, tenancy management, or community safety work.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and bespoke IT systems.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours to meet service needs.

Why work for us?

We are proud to put our people first! By joining Berneslai Homes, you will have access to a wide range of employee benefits including:

  • Agile Working Packages
  • Excellent Pension Scheme
  • Discounted Gym Membership
  • Health & Wellbeing Checks
