Job Description

We are seeking a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Development Engineer (UT/ET) for a full-time position based in Derby. The role involves designing, developing, and deploying advanced automated ultrasonic (UT) and eddy current (ET) inspection techniques, including Phased Array Ultrasonic (PAUT) and Eddy Current Array (ECA) capabilities, specifically for naval nuclear reactor plant components.

Team and Culture

This position is within the NDE Development team, part of the Inspection, Maintenance and Repair Services (IMRS) in the Services Deliver Business Unit (DBU). We foster an inclusive, innovative culture that supports personal growth and career development.

Role Overview

The role encompasses the full NDE inspection cycle—from design to deployment—using cutting-edge probe technology and software, including practical trials and modeling. Training will be provided to develop your technical skills across various inspection methods.

Responsibilities
  1. Work closely with naval nuclear reactor components during pre-service, in-service, and post-service phases.
  2. Develop and implement new NDE methods using bespoke remotely operated machines.
  3. Support field deployments at various sites, including Barrow-in-Furness, Devonport, Faslane, and Vulcan Naval Test Reactor Establishment.
  4. Travel may be required, typically no more than 2 weeks at a time, with deployments supporting 12-hour shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Candidate Requirements
  • Experience with remotely operated Automated Ultrasonic & Eddy Current Testing systems or similar is preferred.
  • Ability to work in a highly technical environment, meet tight deadlines, and produce clear technical reports.
  • Strong academic background in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM).
  • Professional NDT qualifications (e.g., PCN, SNT, ASNT, MIPS, GUIDE) are beneficial, especially in UT and ET techniques.
  • Valid UK driving license and physical capability to operate in challenging working conditions.
