NDT Development Engineer (UT/ET) - Submarines

Location: Derby

We are currently seeking a Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) Development Engineer to join our expanding team. You will be responsible for designing, developing, and deploying advanced automated ultrasonic (UT) and eddy current (ET) inspection techniques, including Phased Array Ultrasonic (PAUT) and Eddy Current Array (ECA) capabilities for naval nuclear reactor components.

Role Context

This position is within the Non-Destructive Examination (NDE) Development team, part of Inspection, Maintenance and Repair Services (IMRS) in the Services Delivery Business Unit (DBU). Key Responsibilities

  • Work closely with naval nuclear reactor components during pre-service, in-service, and post-service phases.
  • Develop and implement new NDE methods using bespoke remotely operated machinery.
  • Travel to sites such as Barrow-in-Furness shipyard, naval bases at Devonport and Faslane, and Vulcan Naval Test Reactor Establishment, usually no more than 2 weeks at a time, less than 25% annually.
  • Support 12-hour shift operations during deployments, including weekends and holidays.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Experience with remotely operated Ultrasonic & Eddy Current Testing systems or similar is preferred.
  • Ability to work in highly technical, multidisciplinary environments under tight deadlines.
  • Strong technical report writing skills.
  • Academic qualifications in STEM; professional NDT certifications (e.g., PCN, SNT, ASNT) are beneficial, especially in UT and ET techniques.

Additional Requirements

  • A valid UK driving license.
  • Ability to support physically demanding tasks in line with H&S policies.
  • Eligibility for UK Security Check clearance; support for application provided by Rolls-Royce.
