Job description

Job Title: Naval Architect/Mechanical Engineer Graduate - Early Careers 2025

Location: Haslar, Gosport

Package: Competitive Salary + Benefits

Role Type: Permanent- Full time

Role ID: SF18227

At QinetiQ we are creating a workplace that is inclusive; where our differences are not only embraced but make us stronger. A place where we can connect with each other and benefit from the experiences and thinking from people with varied backgrounds, and at different stages in their careers.

The Team

The Maritime Engineering Group sits within the Maritime, Land and Weapons business of QinetiQ. The team delivers testing and evaluation consultancy services in the area of hydrodynamics, submarine escape and evacuation and maritime structures. Problem solving forms a significant part of the project work within group – identifying a methodology for solving a client’s issues, mathematically or through physical testing.

What will I be doing?

The primary focus of the job will be the delivery of technical projects relating to the mechanical design of significant components of a submarine. Whilst the role has a specific focus, there will be opportunities to be involved in the group’s wider work streams, which include propulsor and propeller design, dynamic stability, quasi-static stability, seakeeping, resistance and propulsion of surface ships and submarines.

Key Accountabilities
  1. Delivery:
Undertake engineering and technical activities to deliver specific elements of projects. Combine technical knowledge and sound engineering judgement to solve problems. Breakdown complex tasks and then execute the planned schedule of work. Work under the supervision of a Project Technical Lead and Project Manager to deliver the work to the agreed quality, timescale and budget. Participate in business support activities including bidding and planning activities.
  2. Through example:
Demonstrate the expected QinetiQ values and behaviours.
  3. Resilience:
Continue to develop your own skills and knowledge in your areas of expertise. Work with the wider engineering and technical communities to improve the resilience of QinetiQ’s technical offerings.
  4. Internal Collaboration:
Work with the wider technical teams to improve your understanding of the work that is being undertaken within the group and share the details of your own work. Look for opportunities to work with other areas to improve project outputs by applying new methods/processes and/or using new software/toolsets. Develop an understanding of the wider technical management functions (e.g. Technical Excellence; Safety Engineering) and where appropriate, use these functions to assure the technical quality of your own work.
  5. Safety:
Be responsible for your own actions to ensure they are conducted in a safe manner, highlighting hazards and potentially unsafe practices. Where appropriate make recommendations to reduce the risk so that it is as low as responsibly practicable.

Entry Requirements

The applicant should have formal qualifications in Naval Architecture or Mechanical Engineering.

Other Key Skills/traits We Are Looking For Are
  • Highly motivated, dynamic with a positive attitude and values of integrity, collaboration and performance.
  • Keen desire to develop and grow their technical skills and understanding.
  • Some experience of data analysis. Experience of programming (Matlab, Python etc.) would be nice but not necessary.
  • Good communication skills, both written and presentational. Including the ability to exchange complex information.
  • Good team working, organisation, communication and attention to detail.
