NHS Wales Performance & Improvement is seeking to recruit two experienced clinicians to take on the roles of National Clinical Lead (Frailty) and National Clinical Lead (Urgent Care) on a 24 month secondment within the Six Goals for Urgent and Emergency Care (U&EC) Programme. These roles are pivotal in shaping and delivering high-quality, sustainable urgent and emergency care services across Wales.

The post holder will work across NHS Performance & Improvement Teams, NHS Wales and Welsh Government. The successful candidate will have experience working at senior clinical level and will be regularly linking with Associate Medical Directors, Clinical Directors of urgent and emergency care specialties plus operational and multi-professional leads across Local Health Boards and Trusts. Reflecting the Six Goals Principles for whole system working, the individual will also be work with a broad range of stakeholders including local government, the third and independent sectors to lead continuous improvement with local health care services.

Main duties of the job

The National Clinical Leads will play a pivotal role in delivering the Six Goals for Urgent and Emergency Care (U&EC) Programme across NHS Wales.

Key responsibilities include providing national clinical leadership to shape and implement the Six Goals for U&EC, ensuring alignment with Welsh Government priorities for high-quality, sustainable, and accessible care. Working closely with Health Boards, clinical networks, and professional groups to co-design and deliver improvements across the urgent and emergency care pathway. Supporting the redesign of services to improve patient outcomes and staff experience, with a focus on integration, early intervention, and reducing avoidable admissions. Offering subject matter expertise in either frailty or urgent care, contributing to national policy, guidance, and innovation. Contributing to the development and use of metrics to assess progress and impact of the programme goals.

Qualifications and Knowledge

  • Full GMC registration
  • Entrant on the GMC Specialist Register in an appropriate speciality AND holds /has held a substantive consultant post
  • Good understanding of the principles of clinical governance and patient safety
  • Knowledge of Clinical and safety standards for the urgent and emergency care system
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi- disciplinary basis
  • Enhanced knowledge of urgent and emergency care services within Wales based on geography and how this may impact upon patient care

Desirable

  • Post graduate qualification in medical education or clinical leadership/management

  • Qualified healthcare professional with an unblemished General Medical Council registration with appropriate regulatory body
  • Senior Clinical leader with credibility and the ability to command the respect of other clinical and non-clinical professionals
