The Chaplaincy service at King’s College Hospital provides support for matters relating to spiritual, religious and emotional care to patients, their families, visitors, and staff of all faiths and none.

The post holder will participate fully in the provision of spiritual, emotional, and religious care to our stakeholders ensuring that the service meets professional standards and best current practice. They will be a point of reference for the religious and spiritual issues associated with death and bereavement and ethical matters in the Trust, providing specialist knowledge and advice on request. The post holder is also required to participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota.

Education and qualifications
  • MA or post-graduate qualification in Healthcare Chaplaincy or equivalent
  • Recognised Islamic theological qualification, authorisation/licence to minister from an accountable agency/ organisation in the UK
  • UK Board of Healthcare Chaplaincy registration
  • Additional counselling or pastoral training
Knowledge and experience
  • Substantial experience of providing pastoral, spiritual and religious care
  • Substantial leadership experience following becoming recognised or accredited within a faith or belief community
  • Experience of supporting people through difficult and/or distressing circumstances
  • Experience of working with multi-faith or belief groups and ecumenical teams
  • Experience in creating and delivering teaching and training programmes relating to pastoral, spiritual and religious care
  • In depth knowledge of own faith or belief group teaching, tradition and practices, and an ability to apply this knowledge in a health care context – particularly in relation to birth, death and illness
  • Working knowledge of faith and belief systems other than one’s own, and the ability to apply this knowledge working in a secular multi-cultural, multi-faith and belief context
  • Demonstrable knowledge and a commitment to working in an ecumenical, multi-faith or belief, and multi-cultural way, with an openness to the views and doubts of others and knowledge of how to care for people of all faiths and beliefs
  • Good working knowledge of the UKBHC Code of Conduct
  • Experience of delivering pastoral, spiritual and religious care in a healthcare setting
  • Experience of working within healthcare chaplaincy
  • Knowledge and understanding of workings of the NHS to enable the post holder to work as part of a chaplaincy team and play an active part in the life of the Trust in a multi-disciplinary context
  • Knowledge and understanding of national policies and procedures relevant to healthcare Chaplaincy
  • Theoretical knowledge of ethical issues relating to health care

  • Demonstrable ability to create and maintain excellent working relationships with peers and colleagues
  • To accept that the chaplaincy work pattern can be unpredictable and be able to adapt to unexpected and sudden happenings
  • Ability to deliver pastoral, spiritual and religious care to patients and families of all faiths and beliefs
  • Active listening skills and an ability to respond to others spiritual needs (without proselytising about personal faith or belief)
  • Ability to reflect theologically as an individual and as part of a team
  • Excellent organisational skills and oral and written communication skills, including an ability to teach and share ideas and work as a part of a team
  • Ability to support dying patients and/or families of deceased patients in a compassionate and sensitive manner, including conducting funerals

  • Ability to work autonomously and under pressure. Ability to prioritise and manage own workload, and to work on own initiative without supervision and in teams.
