Job summary

Buckland and Betchworth Choral Society in Surrey invites a Music Director to lead our rehearsals and shape an engaging programme for about 50 amateur singers. The appointment starts January 2027 and involves artistic direction, repertoire selection, and coordination with our long–standing accompanist.

The successful candidate will hold a recognised music qualification (diploma or degree), have experience directing a choir, and be able to motivate mixed-ability singers.

Qualifications

• Proven ability to lead a choir and direct rehearsals.
• Experience booking and working with professional instrumentalists and singers.
• Solid grasp of choral repertoire across secular and religious styles.

Responsibilities

• Lead weekly rehearsals and shape the concert programme.

Music Director Vacancy
Buckland & Betchworth Choral Society (BBCS), www.bbcsinfo.org, is looking to appoint a Music Director for the start of January 2027. We are a mixed-ability choral society based in Betchworth, Surrey.
The choir was founded about 100 years ago and has circa 50 members. Every April the choir competes in the Leith Hill Music Festival, www.lhmf.co.uk. In addition, it presents at least three other concerts a year in the locality. We sing a wide variety of secular and religious classical choral music. We have also experienced a broad range of genres, including modern composers and, for the summer concert, a lighter repertoire using classical as well as more modern material. We also are fortunate to have an accomplished accompanist who has been with the choir for many years.
Rehearsals are held at Betchworth Village Memorial Village Hall every Wednesday from 7.45 to 9.45 p.m.
We are looking to appoint an MD with the following skill set:

• should hold a recognised qualification in music (e.g. at diploma or degree level). Ideally with a specialism in conducting or choral direction
• has experience working with choral groups, booking and working with professional instrumentalists and singers, and have a solid grasp of the choral repertoire
• has an engaging personality, can motivate and work with mixed-ability amateur singers
• has the ability and ambition to build on BBCS's potential to become an even more accomplished and successful choir
