Job summary

The Song School is a nonprofit organisation delivering music education to children and young people in Southend-on-Sea. We are seeking a part-time Music Coach to lead the development of our drums provision, primarily in a group setting for ages 5 to teens.

You will also coach some 1:1 drum students, contribute to songwriting and production activities, and collaborate with our coaching team to deliver performances and showcases. DBS checking is required and you’ll report to the Studio Manager.

Qualifications

• Qualified in Music to degree level or vocational equivalent.
• Experience leading group drum sessions with children and young people.
• Ability to write or produce songs.
• Strong communication and collaborative, team-first approach.
• Willingness to undertake Enhanced DBS check.

Responsibilities

• Develop and evolve The Song School’s approach to drums (group structure, progression, resources, and session plans).
• Plan and deliver high-quality group drum sessions for children and young people.
• Deliver some 1:1 drum coaching alongside group delivery.
• Bring a creative, song-led approach into sessions, supporting young people to write, arrange and/or produce music where relevant.
• Collaborate with the coaching team to support performances, showcases, and creative projects.
• Work in line with safeguarding, health & safety, and inclusive practice expectations.
• Contribute to wider programme delivery where appropriate (as a multi-instrumentalist).

12 hours per week / 42 weeks per year

Ideally Monday–Wednesday, but we’re open to an alternative structure for the right candidate (within our programme delivery times).

The Song School is a nonprofit - building community through music making in Southend-on-Sea. We offer music programmes for children and young people regardless of their circumstances, including weekly sessions in instruments, vocals, songwriting, production, and performance. Our mission is to ensure every young person can access quality music education experiences through our Song School Fund and community partnerships.

The Role

We’re recruiting a brilliant part-time Music Coach to lead the development of our approach to drums at The Song School.

This role is primarily group-focused, working with children and young people aged 5 through to teens. You’ll help shape a clear, inclusive and exciting pathway for drummers — and bring a wider creative edge through songwriting and/or production experience.

This role includes taking on coaching for some existing 1:1 drum students as part of the next stage of our drums programme. There is also opportunity to take on additional hours as the programme grows.

Key Responsibilities
