Job summary

Surrey & Sussex Police Joint Transport Service is looking for a Multiskilled Vehicle Technician in Crawley Down. You will inspect, service and repair a diverse fleet including BEV/Hybrid vehicles and specialist systems such as ANPR and CCTV.

You’ll use modern diagnostic equipment and ensure high safety and reliability standards. The role offers a 4-on, 4-off shift pattern with a healthy work-life balance, plus ongoing training and career development opportunities.

Qualifications

• City & Guilds / IMI qualifications in vehicle maintenance or an equivalent.
• Experience with Hybrid, BEV, and various vehicle types.
• Full UK driving licence and ability to travel between workshop locations.

Responsibilities

• Inspect, service, diagnose and repair a diverse vehicle fleet including specialist systems.
• Use diagnostic equipment to identify faults and perform mechanical/electrical repairs.

Job description

This role is within a unit where Surrey Police and Sussex Police work in collaboration, whilst remaining two separate legal entities/employers with different terms and conditions.

Both Surrey Police staff and Sussex Police staff are employed in this unit on their own force terms and conditions.

Successful candidates may be appointed on the terms and conditions of employment of either Surrey Police or Sussex Police, depending on organisational requirements. A discussion will be held with the successful candidate to confirm the details of location, salary, allowances and hours.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

As a Multiskilled Vehicle Technician, you'll play a vital role in keeping the vehicles and specialist police equipment which include ANPR, CCTV and communication equipment that support Surrey & Sussex Police operational, safe and ready to respond. Working within our Joint Transport Service, you'll be responsible for the inspection, servicing, diagnosis and repair of a diverse fleet, including motorcycles, cars, light and medium commercial vehicles, and specialist operational vehicles.

This is a varied and technically rewarding role where no two days are the same. You'll work on a wide range of vehicle technologies, from traditional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles through to Hybrid, Battery Electric (BEV), Hydrogen and other Ultra Low Emission Vehicles (ULEVs). You'll use the latest diagnostic equipment to identify faults, carry out mechanical and electrical repairs, and ensure every vehicle meets the highest standards of safety, reliability and performance.

Your responsibilities will include:

• Diagnosing faults and carrying out servicing, inspections, maintenance and repairs across our diverse fleet which include vehicle borne police specialist systems such as ANPR, CCTV & communication systems .
• Using manufacturer-approved and computer-based diagnostic equipment to identify and rectify mechanical and electrical faults.
• Maintaining and repairing emergency lighting, warning systems and specialist power management equipment fitted to operational vehicles.
• Supporting the transition to greener technologies by maintaining Hybrid, Electric and Hydrogen-powered vehicles.
• Decommissioning vehicles by safely removing specialist emergency equipment prior to disposal.
• Maintaining the highest standards of workshop safety, ensuring Health & Safety procedures are always followed and contributing to a safe, clean and professional working environment.

Skills & Experience

We’re looking for a skilled, motivated and proactive Multiskilled Vehicle Technician who takes pride in delivering high-quality workmanship and enjoys working as part of a professional team.

To be successful in this role, you'll have:

• A City & Guilds Motor Vehicle Technician Certificate Parts 1, 2 & 3 (Full Technicians Certificate) or IMI/NVQ Level 3 in Vehicle Maintenance and Repair, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
• Relevant qualifications or equivalent experience in Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEV), Light and Heavy Commercial Vehicles, or Plant/Ground Support Equipment Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering.
• Experience servicing, maintaining and repairing a wide range of vehicles, including mechanical, electrical and electronic systems.
• Knowledge and practical experience of using modern diagnostic equipment to identify and rectify vehicle faults.
• Knowledge and practical experience in diagnosing and repairing vehicle electrical systems, with proficiency in using diagnostic tools such as multimeters, Power Probes, and wiring diagrams.
• Experience working on specialist vehicle systems and ancillary equipment, such as ADAS, emergency lighting, CCTV, tail lifts and other integrated vehicle technologies.
• Excellent fault-finding and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work efficiently under pressure and use your initiative when working with minimal supervision.
• A commitment to delivering work to the highest quality and safety standards, while maintaining a clean, organised and safe working environment.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively as part of a supportive team.

You’ll also need to hold a full UK driving licence, as you’ll be required to travel between workshop locations and carry out road testing of vehicles as part of your role.

This role operates on a 4-on, 4-off shift pattern, providing a predictable rota and an excellent work-life balance. Over an 8-week period, you’ll work 28 days and enjoy 28 days off, giving you regular extended breaks to spend time with family and friends, pursue hobbies, travel or simply recharge.

Your shift pattern will be:

• Day 1: 07:00 – 19:00
• Day 2: 07:00 – 18:00
• Day 3: 07:00 – 18:00

Further Information

In addition to the salary shown above, this role includes a £2,400 per annum Tool Allowance and a £4,000 per annum Market Supplement.

This position operates on a 4-on, 4-off shift pattern and attracts a 20% unsocial hours/shift allowance. Including these allowances, the starting salary for this role is £49,279.89 per annum.
