Job summary

Cheshire East Council is seeking an experienced Multisystemic Therapy Team Supervisor to lead a team delivering MST interventions for children and families. The role involves on‑call hours, clinical advice, and ensuring safe service delivery outside normal hours.

You will oversee casework, support practitioners, and collaborate with Social Care and partner agencies to drive outcomes. The position offers hybrid/remote working where possible and a supportive learning culture.

Job description

We are looking for an experienced and motivated leader to join our Children's Services team as a Multisystemic Therapy Team Supervisor.

What is Multisystemic Therapy (MST)?

Multisystemic Therapy (MST) is an intensive, evidence-based intervention for children and young people aged 10-17 who are at risk of entering care, custody or other out-of-home placements. MST works with the whole system around a young person, including their family, school, peer group and wider community, to understand and address the factors contributing to difficulties.

MST is based on many years of research into what works with families and uses evidence-based approaches including behavioural therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy and structured family therapy.

MST takes an ecological approach, recognising that a young person’s behaviour is influenced by interconnected systems including their family, peers, school and wider community. Therapists work intensively with families in their homes and communities, empowering parents and carers to become the primary agents of change and helping families build the skills, confidence and support networks needed to achieve lasting positive outcomes.

Previous MST qualifications are not required.

Successful candidates will receive comprehensive training in the licensed MST model, together with ongoing coaching, supervision, consultation and fidelity support from an MST consultant.

This role provides a unique opportunity to develop therapeutic and systemic practice skills within internationally recognised, evidence-based interventions.

About the role:

The post holder will contribute to and participate in arrangements that provide 24‑hour, 7‑day‑a‑week support for children, young people, families and practitioners involved in MST. This will include providing clinical advice and support to practitioners during periods of on‑call cover and helping to ensure continuity of support and safe service delivery outside normal working hours. The frequency and operation of the on‑call rota will be determined by team arrangements and Council policies.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading and supervising a team of practitioners to deliver high‑quality interventions in line with the MST model.
• Providing clinical oversight, risk management and safeguarding leadership across all cases.
• Supporting complex decision‑making and ensuring positive outcomes for children, young people and families.
• Building effective relationships with Social Care, Early Help, Family Help and other key partners to coordinate support.
• Driving service quality, performance, learning and continuous improvement through supervision, audit and outcome monitoring.
• Promoting strengths‑based, trauma‑informed and culturally responsive practice across the service.

About you:

We are looking for an experienced and passionate practitioner who is committed to improving outcomes for children, young people and families. You will be a confident leader with strong safeguarding knowledge, excellent judgement and the ability to support and develop others in delivering high‑quality practice.

You will bring:

• A professional qualification in social work, probation, mental health, psychology, nursing, or a related field.
• Significant experience working with children and families facing complex safeguarding and behavioural challenges.
• Experience supervising, coaching and supporting practitioners to achieve positive outcomes.
• Strong knowledge of safeguarding, risk management, child development and family functioning.
• The ability to make sound decisions, manage competing priorities and provide clear professional guidance.
• A commitment to strengths‑based, trauma‑informed and anti‑discriminatory practice.
• Excellent communication and partnership‑working skills, with the ability to build effective relationships across services.
• A flexible approach and willingness to travel across Cheshire East as required.
