Job summary

THG Labs in Frome is seeking a proactive Maintenance Engineer with strong mechanical and electrical knowledge to join our engineering team. You will maintain, diagnose, and repair a wide range of production and site equipment to maximise uptime.

As a Multi-Skilled Engineer you will perform PPM and reactive maintenance on conveyors, gearboxes, pumps, motors and automation, diagnose faults, and support continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

• Time-served apprenticeship or NVQ Level 3 in Mechanical or Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineering.
• Proven experience in a maintenance engineering role within manufacturing, FMCG, or industrial environments.
• Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills with experience on bearings, gearboxes, pumps, conveyors, pneumatics and hydraulics.

Responsibilities

• Carry out planned preventive and reactive maintenance on mechanical and electrical systems.
• Diagnose mechanical faults and complete repairs following safety standards and manufacturers’ guidelines.
• Undertake equipment strip-downs, replacements, alignments, and rebuilds.
• Perform basic electrical fault-finding and safely isolate equipment.
• Support continuous improvement projects to improve equipment reliability and efficiency.
• Maintain maintenance records in the CMMS system.
• Ensure compliance with Health & Safety, environmental and quality standards.
• Collaborate with production and operations teams.

About the Role

We’re looking for a proactive and versatile Maintenance Engineer with strong mechanical expertise and sound electrical knowledge to join our fast-paced engineering team. The successful candidate will play a key role in maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing a wide range of production and site equipment to ensure maximum operational efficiency and minimal downtime.

**As a Multi-Skilled Engineer you will:**

• Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance on mechanical and electrical systems, including conveyors, gearboxes, pumps, motors, bearings, pneumatic systems, hydraulic equipment, and automated machinery.

• Diagnose mechanical faults and complete repairs in accordance with safety standards and manufacturers’ guidelines.

• Undertake equipment strip-downs, component replacements, alignments, adjustments, and rebuilds.

• Perform basic electrical fault-finding and safely isolate equipment when required.

• Support continuous improvement initiatives and contribute to engineering projects aimed at improving equipment reliability, performance, and efficiency.

• Maintain accurate maintenance records using the company’s CMMS system.

• Ensure compliance with all relevant Health & Safety, environmental, and quality standards.

• Provide technical support and collaborate closely with production and operations teams.

**What skills and experience do I need for this role?Essential Requirements:**

• Time-served apprenticeship or relevant engineering qualification (NVQ Level 3, ONC, or HNC) in Mechanical or Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineering.

• Proven experience in a similar maintenance engineering role within a manufacturing, FMCG, or industrial environment.

• Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills, with practical experience working on bearings, gearboxes, pumps, conveyors, pneumatics, and hydraulics.

• Sound electrical knowledge, including motors, sensors, control systems, and safe electrical isolation.

• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, technical diagrams, and schematics.

• Excellent problem-solving ability and attention to detail.

• Flexible, team-oriented, and capable of working independently under pressure.

Desirable:

• Electrical qualification or experience undertaking basic electrical maintenance and fault-finding.

• Experience working with automated systems, robotics, or packaging machinery.

• Welding, fabrication, machining, or mechanical fitting experience.

• Knowledge of lean maintenance or continuous improvement practices, including TPM, Kaizen, and 5S.
