Job summary

Mitie Group plc. is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to provide maintenance across the hospital estate, ensuring mechanical plant, equipment and building services operate safely and efficiently.

You will perform planned preventative maintenance, diagnose faults, undertake repairs and minor installations, while coordinating with ward staff and contractors to minimise disruption to patient care.

Job description

To provide a comprehensive mechanical engineering maintenance service across the hospital estate, ensuring all mechanical plant, equipment, and building services operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with statutory and NHS standards. The post holder will undertake planned preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, repairs, installations, and improvement works to support the continuous delivery of patient care and clinical services.

Maintenance and Repairs

• Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on mechanical plant and systems.
• Diagnose faults and undertake repairs to mechanical equipment and infrastructure.
• Respond promptly to breakdowns and emergency maintenance requests.
• Complete reactive maintenance tasks in accordance with service requirements.
• Undertake minor installation and project works as directed.

Mechanical Systems

• Maintain, inspect, test, and repair: Heating and hot water systems.
• Ventilation and air handling units (AHUs).
• Air conditioning and cooling systems.
• Steam and condensate systems.
• Domestic water services.
• Pumps, valves, and pipework systems.
• Pressure systems and associated equipment.
• Medical gas infrastructure (where suitably trained and authorised).
• Building Management System (BMS) controlled plant.
• Water treatment and legionella control systems.

Compliance and Safety

• Ensure all mechanical equipment complies with statutory regulations and healthcare guidance.
• Adhere to Health and Safety legislation, risk assessments, and safe working procedures.
• Participate in permit‑to‑work systems and isolation procedures.
• Assist with audits, inspections, and compliance monitoring activities.
• Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation.

Operational Support

• Support clinical departments by ensuring critical engineering systems remain operational.
• Liaise with ward staff, contractors, and external service providers.
• Minimise disruption to patient care during maintenance activities.
• Participation in shift patterns and on‑call rotas where required.

Assist with planned shutdowns and emergency service restorations, Occasional manual handling and use of specialist mechanical tools and testing equipment.

Overall Purpose of the Role

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for maintaining the hospital's critical mechanical, You should have strong knowledge and be able to undertake all facets of maintenance and installation requirements as required in the scope of the contract, ensuring that the day-to-day planned preventative maintenance activities of building maintenance is completed in line with contractual obligations. All assets should be maintained in accordance with the O&M Manuals, alongside compliance with all Health & Safety Legislation and Company Policy (fire regulations, COSHH, safe working practises, PPE, PAT testing etc).

Recognised apprenticeship in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.

• NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds, BTEC, or equivalent qualification in a relevant mechanical discipline.

Essential Experience
