Distinct Consultancy Group is seeking a Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer with a mechanical bias for a busy manufacturing site in Millerdale. The role requires hands-on maintenance, strong mechanical skills, and good electrical/pneumatic knowledge.

You will join a small team on a fixed 4-on, 4-off night shift, keeping production equipment running safely and efficiently. Apprentice-trained or time-served engineers are encouraged to apply.

Qualifications

  • Apprentice trained or time-served with strong mechanical bias.
  • Experience in manufacturing or FMCG environments is preferred.
  • Good electrical and pneumatic knowledge alongside mechanical skills.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance across equipment.
  • Respond to breakdowns and diagnose faults to root cause.
  • Provide front-line engineering support to production teams.
  • Monitor equipment condition and log maintenance activities.
  • Carry out mechanical repairs and modifications as required.
  • Support projects, installations and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Supervise contractors and ensure safety procedures are followed.

Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer – Mechanical Bias

Location: Millerdale

Salary: £48,000 rising to £50,000

Shift: Fixed Nights – 4 on / 4 off, 6:00pm–6:00am

Holidays: 25 days per annum

The Opportunity

I am currently recruiting for an experienced Multi-Skilled Maintenance Engineer – Mechanical Bias to join the engineering team at a busy manufacturing site in Millerdale.

This is a fantastic opportunity for an apprentice-trained or time-served engineer who enjoys a hands-on maintenance role and has strong mechanical skills, backed up by good electrical and pneumatic knowledge.

Working as part of a small and close-knit engineering team on a fixed 4-on, 4-off night shift, you will be responsible for keeping production equipment running safely and efficiently, carrying out planned and reactive maintenance, diagnosing breakdowns and supporting continuous improvement projects.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) across all production equipment.
  • Respond quickly and effectively to breakdowns and equipment failures.
  • Diagnose faults and identify root causes to prevent repeat breakdowns.
  • Provide front-line engineering support to manufacturing and production teams.
  • Monitor plant and equipment condition, identifying potential issues before they develop into failures.
  • Complete maintenance work accurately and to a high standard, with a Right First Time approach.
  • Carry out mechanical repairs, adjustments and modifications.
  • Support engineering projects, installations and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with the management and supervision of contractors when required.
  • Ensure contractors comply with site Health & Safety, GMP and company procedures.
  • Complete stores requisitions for engineering parts and services.
  • Maintain accurate records and detailed logs of all maintenance activities using company systems.
  • Work closely with Engineering, Operations, Quality, Shift Managers and Production teams.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with Health & Safety, Quality and Engineering procedures.
  • Take an active role in developing your engineering knowledge and skills through training and continuous development.
The Equipment & Engineering Environment

The successful candidate will ideally have experience working with a combination of mechanical, electrical and pneumatic manufacturing equipment, with exposure to:

  • Packaging and bagging machinery
  • Multihead weighers
  • Checkweighers – including equipment such as Martini, Yamato, Multipond or Ishida
  • Gearboxes, bearings and mechanical drives
  • Pneumatic systems and components
  • Single and three-phase electrical systems
  • Three-phase motors and VFDs/inverters
  • Contactors, relays, transformers and SMPS
  • Control panels and wiring
  • Basic PLC fault finding
  • General production and manufacturing machinery
Mechanical Skills

As this is a mechanically biased position, strong mechanical engineering skills are essential.

Experience in the following would be highly advantageous:

  • Mechanical fault finding and repair
  • Bearings and gearboxes
  • Pneumatics
  • Bench fitting
  • Metal fabrication
  • Welding – MIG/TIG
  • Using hand tools, drills, grinders and workshop equipment
  • Fabricating or modifying simple machine parts
  • Working from measurements, drawings or specifications
  • General machinery repairs and modifications
Electrical Skills

You don't need to be an electrical specialist, but you should have a good working knowledge of electrical maintenance and be confident carrying out basic electrical fault finding, including:

  • Single and three-phase systems
  • Motors
  • VFDs
  • Relays and contactors
  • Transformers
  • SMPS
  • Wiring harnesses
  • Control panels
  • Basic PLC fault finding
About You
  • Apprentice trained, Level 3 qualified or time-served/equivalent.
  • Experienced within a manufacturing, production or FMCG environment.
  • Strong mechanically, with good electrical and pneumatic knowledge.
  • Experienced in both PPM and reactive/breakdown maintenance.
  • A confident fault finder who looks beyond the immediate problem to identify root cause.
  • Practical and hands-on, with good mechanical repair and fabrication skills.
  • Able to work independently while also contributing effectively to a small engineering team.
  • Comfortable working under pressure and responding to production-critical breakdowns.
  • Safety-conscious with a strong understanding of engineering and site procedures.
  • A logical thinker who can find practical solutions to unexpected production problems.
  • Committed to delivering a high-quality, Right First Time standard of work.
