Job Description

We are seeking a Motorsports Sportscar Data Analyst to apply data science and modeling techniques to develop and refine race strategy tools, facilitating insightful pre-race planning and real-time decision-making during live race events.

Responsibilities
  1. Develop and refine AI/ML models for sportscar race strategies, including improving existing Python code and reimagining models as needed.
  2. Create platforms for Monte Carlo simulations and develop tire degradation models for accurate predictions.
  3. Design and prototype visualizations to effectively communicate insights, collaborating with IT and software teams for implementation.
  4. Use race strategy tools to verify model accuracy, understand performance, and identify areas for improvement, working closely with IMSA and WEC teams.
  5. Analyze vehicle pace considering track migration, traffic, energy strategies, and tire and fuel effects.
  6. Predict pace variations to inform session planning and strategy development.
  7. Collaborate with cross-functional teams within GM and its motorsports divisions to develop and support race strategy tools.
  8. Co-develop production race strategy software with data science and IT teams.
  9. Apply analysis techniques across different racing series to validate and refine models.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, or related field.
  • 5+ years experience in top-level motorsports series (e.g., NASCAR, IMSA, F1, IndyCar, WEC) with at least 2 years developing or using strategy tools.
  • Deep knowledge of motorsports race strategies and experience in analysis and modeling during live events.
  • Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or similar programming languages.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML modeling techniques and industry applications.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and a forward-thinking approach.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with experience in relationship-building across teams and organizations, and a patient, mentoring attitude.

This position may offer relocation benefits and requires travel up to 10% within the US.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in a quantitative or related field.
  • Experience in tire modeling, construction, testing, and validation.
  • Knowledge of simulation workflows in professional motorsports and experience using simulation tools for vehicle performance optimization.
  • Experience with machine learning libraries and big data tools (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, SQL, NoSQL).
