Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. The successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC three times per week, at minimum.

The Role

This position within the GM Motorsports Program involves developing performance metrics, conceptualizing innovative analysis methods, and implementing these techniques to enhance on-track performance. As a Senior Performance Engineer, you will focus on validating, refining, and applying new tools and methods to optimize vehicle setups for specific events and explore new directions for future vehicle development. Collaboration with the Performance Engineering group and regular interaction with the broader GM Motorsports team and customer race teams are essential.

What You’ll Do

  1. Collaborate with GM-supported teams, engineering groups, and personnel to identify analysis areas for greatest benefit.
  2. Answer questions across all GM Motorsports groups, building collective knowledge.
  3. Innovate new ways to achieve greater performance in targeted areas.
  4. Train others to understand models and execute analysis and reporting tasks.
  5. Communicate findings, updates, and tool developments to relevant groups.
  6. Improve analysis methods and vehicle dynamics understanding by reimagining solutions, prototyping, and validating ideas against data.
  7. Work with GM Software team to implement solutions in production tools.
  8. Push the boundaries of current tool chains to better understand race vehicle limits and improve tools and techniques.
  9. Collaborate with core engineering and race series groups for conceptual studies and big-picture development.
  10. Explore simulation and analysis tools to improve on-track performance, and present findings clearly through reports and in-person discussions.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Physics, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience in top-level motorsports series (e.g., NASCAR, IMSA, F1, IndyCar, WEC)
  • Knowledge of simulation workflows, both offline and DIL simulator, with experience in vehicle performance optimization.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, MATLAB, C#.
  • Extensive experience analyzing on-track performance using vehicle dynamics principles and statistical methods.
  • Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to multitask in a dynamic environment.
  • This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Race engineering experience, including race car setup, event preparation, inspection, and strategy.
  • Proficiency in motorsports data analysis software (Pi Toolbox, Atlas, Motec).
  • Experience with multibody modeling and simulation (Dymola/Modelica, ADAMS).
  • Knowledge of tire modeling, construction, testing, and validation.
  • Experience with aerodynamic testing and CFD application to vehicle modeling.
  • Familiarity with vehicle testing methods and data reduction techniques.
