University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust is seeking a compassionate Mortuary Assistant to join Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services. The role supports three mortuary sites, handling hospital, coronial, and forensic post-mortem tasks with dignity and respect.

You will be responsible for data entry, safe disposal, answering enquiries, preparing bodies for viewing or release, and dispatching samples in line with trust policies.

Responsibilities

  • Input accurate and timely patient data on Trust computerised systems.
  • Safe disposal of contaminated materials, including sharps and confidential waste.
  • Handle telephone and face-to-face enquiries professionally.
  • Prepare bodies for viewing in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.
  • Prepare bodies for release to undertakers in line with Trust policies.
  • Dispatch and post samples to authorised persons and laboratories in compliance with regulations.
  • Perform agreed clinical and non-clinical tasks following training as required.
  • Participate in training and support of other staff as appropriate.
  • Maintain equipment daily and report faults to senior staff and suppliers.
  • Follow policies, SOPs, and escalate changes to senior/medical staff.
  • Communicate patient results to authorised recipients and refer to clinical staff when required.

Job description

Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services (CWPS) provide Mortuary services across three mortuary sites; University Hospital Coventry NHS Trust, Rugby St Cross, and South Warwickshire NHS Foundation Trust. The Mortuary team cover both Hospital and Community deaths across Coventry and Warwickshire conducting hospital, coronial, high risk and forensic post-mortem examinations. Our Mortuary network cares for over 4,000 patients per year. We are the busiest forensic department in the region serving West Midlands, West Mercia and Warwick Police forces, with over 1,000 patients each year. CWPS are looking for a compassionate individual who will be part of a team responsible for caring for our deceased patients with dignity and respect. Please note that this position is not eligible for sponsorship.

  • To prepare the bodies of deceased patients for release to undertakers in accordance with Trust policies and procedures.

  • Undertake agreed clinical and non-clinical tasks following training ensuring referral to appropriate trained staff asrequired.
  • Participate in the training and support of other staff members asappropriate.
  • To participate in appraisals and personal reviews and to work to achieve personalobjectives.
  • To maintain equipment on a day-to-day basis in accordance with department policies and procedures and in accordance with manufactures guidelines and report any faults to senior staff and equipment suppliers.
  • At all times work according to policies and Standard Operative Procedures and bring to the attention of senior staff any changes inpractices.
  • Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from knownhazards.
  • Support with maintaining quality management system to include conducting audits.
  • Adhere to correct procedures following accidents, injuries, spillages and breakages and ensure that these are reported to the appropriateofficer.
  • When problems arise know when to refer to senior and medical staff asappropriate.
  • To communicate appropriate patient results to those authorised to receive them and to refer to clinical and scientific staff whenrequired.
