Job summary

Airbus seeks an undergraduate student for a 12.5-month internship in Filton, Bristol, within the Virtual Product Engineering team under UK CR&T. The role blends multidisciplinary design and optimisation with data-driven methods, offering hands-on engineering experience.

You will explore AI/ML, modelling tools, and demonstrate methods on real aircraft-related problems while gaining industry insight and potential future opportunities at Airbus.

Qualifications

  • Studying towards a degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or equivalent.
  • Experience in programming and willingness to apply Python to engineering modelling and ML problems.
  • Ability to summarise findings in technical reports.
  • Good team player with strong communication skills and ability to work independently.
  • Fluency in English.

Responsibilities

  • Support development of new approaches to enable rapid exploration of design options for future aircraft products.
  • Utilise aerodynamics, structures and systems simulation methods to describe key disciplinary characteristics.
  • Fuse data to enable Multi-Disciplinary Analysis and Optimisation.
  • Explore AI/ML, Agent Based Modelling, and possibly Quantum Computing to enhance aircraft design exploration.
  • Demonstrate approaches on an aircraft and air transport system related engineering problem.

As a successful candidate you will work in the transnational Virtual Product Engineering team of the Central Research &Technology (R&T) organisation in the UK, based in the Airbus Aerospace Integrated Research and Test Centre in Filton, Bristol.

We are a team based on agile engineering principles and placing a strong value on innovation. With a multinational makeup and team members will have opportunities to interact with colleagues in France and Germany. Our team focus is on the development of future capabilities to support Multidisciplinary Design and Optimisation through Modelling and Simulation.

What you will be doing
  • Supporting the development of new approaches to enable the rapid exploration of design options for future aircraft products;
  • Utilising aerodynamics, structures and systems simulation methods the key disciplinary characteristics of an engineering problem can be described;
  • Fusing the data together to enable Multi Disciplinary Analysis and Optimisation to be realised that can identify the best engineering solution for a given objective;
  • You will investigate how techniques such as AI / Machine Learning, Agent Based Modelling and, potentially, Quantum Computing can enable a rapid understanding and exploration of the aircraft design space. Such techniques offer opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of air transport;
  • At the end of the placement you will support the demonstration of such approaches on an aircraft and air transport system related engineering problem.
Requirements

Our placements are open to Undergraduates only . Therefore it is mandatory for candidates to be an undergraduate for the whole duration of the placement. Please inform your graduation date on your application.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Studying towards a degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, or equivalent;
  • A passion for Aerospace and one or more of its related engineering disciplines;
  • Experience in computer programming and a willingness to learn and apply the Python programming language and its common packages to problems in engineering modelling and simulation, optimisation and machine learning;
  • An ability to summarise findings in technical reports;
  • A good team player with excellent communication skills, and able to work independently;
  • Fluency in English.
SECURITY CLEARANCE

You will be subject to a BPSS (Baseline Personnel Security Standard) check. You may also need to gain UK SC-level Security Clearance or Export Control, depending on the role.
