Job description

Are you an experienced mixed vet looking for a fantastic opportunity in a stunning location? Then look no further than Honddu Vets!

About Us

Honddu Vets is an independent mixed practice in Brecon, with the beautiful Brecon Beacons on our doorstep. We're looking for an experienced vet who thrives on the variety of mixed practice. Here, no two days are the same; you'll handle everything from routine check-ups to complex cases, with visits across the stunning countryside.

Our diverse caseload is approximately 50% large animal (mainly family-run beef and sheep enterprises, with a strong focus on promoting preventative herd health), 40% small animal, and 10% equine work. Building lasting relationships with our loyal clients and local farmers is truly at the heart of what we do.

Our 11-vet team boasts a wealth of experience, ranging from recent graduates to those with over 25 years in practice – in fact, our three partners, Lizzy, Huw, and Helen, alone share an impressive 63 years of combined expertise. We are committed to supporting your professional growth and are happy to support your interests and strengths. Whether you’re looking to pursue a certificate (Helen already has hers in small animal medicine, and Chris is currently working on his in small animal surgery), CPD or attend a specialist event (like Pip's recent trip to the Goat Veterinary Society Summer Conference), we're here to help you achieve your goals.

We are a collaborative team; our daily morning huddles are a great way to keep everyone up to date, share ideas and catch up before starting the day. We also hold monthly clinical meetings to discuss cases and share knowledge. More than that, we're a genuinely friendly and supportive bunch that cares about each other's well-being. We've even downward-dogged our way to relaxed bliss with workplace yoga sessions – though we usually need a strong coffee afterwards to remember where we parked our cars!

“Great, friendly team to work with over the last 10 years. Lots of help and support offered to new members of the team, and a lovely new practice with all the equipment available for us to use. Very friendly clients on the whole, who are appreciative of our independence in practice. Also, very sociable colleagues outside of work with a variety of group activities organised.” Kate, MRCVS

Having worked at the practice for numerous years, I can happily say the bosses are knowledgeable, forward-thinking and supportive of both professional development and personal welfare.” Ruth, MRCVS

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my first year at Honddu as a new graduate. The team are friendly and there is an amazing variety in case load – you really do get the opportunity to see/treat all animals in a wide variety of situations.” Charlotte, MRCVS

We've recently moved into a purpose-built building packed with all the facilities you'd expect, including two dedicated large animal consultation/surgical rooms, and a dedicated large animal lab and prep area. We are well-equipped on both the small and large animal sides.

The Rota

Our vets work a 4-day week (8:30 am - 5:30 pm), with a fixed day off and just 1:12 Saturday mornings (9 am – 1 pm). We structure your week for a balanced mix, with days focusing either on small animal or large animal duties. Our large animal days are efficiently split, with one vet on ambulatory work, another handling clinic duties and emergencies, and a third dedicated to TB testing. Plus, we have two dedicated ATT testers to support the team. We also run zone days for routine work, ensuring efficient travel and client service. Our RVN team is passionate about getting involved in all areas of mixed practice, allowing us to have an RVN accompany and assist the vet on large animal duties each day.

We provide our own out-of-hours cover, with a 1:8 first on-call and a 1:8 second on-call rota, and one set weeknight each week (which alternates between 1st and 2nd on-call). You will receive an OOH bonus per call seen, and accommodation is also available at the practice if you prefer to stay on site during your on-call.

Outside of work

We're a team that loves to socialise, and beyond our annual summer BBQ and Christmas party, we take full advantage of the incredible adventures available right on our doorstep. With the Brecon Beacons National Park to the south and the Black Mountains to the east, we can enjoy dog walks, hiking, cycling, and kayaking, all with breathtaking views. And even with all this natural beauty, we're still within easy reach of cities like Cardiff and Bristol.

There’s a welcoming atmosphere and a strong sense of community here that extends to our fundraising efforts. This year, we’re raising money for Stroke UK by cycling the Taff Trail from Brecon to Cardiff.

We offer

  • A salary of £42,000 - £60,000, depending on experience
  • Out-of-hours bonus per call seen, plus on-site accommodation available during on-call
  • 22 days holiday, plus bank holidays (based on a 4-day week), with time off in lieu of a bank holiday worked
  • Potential for future practice investment for the right candidate
  • Work vehicle provided
  • CPD encouraged (if it benefits you, it benefits us), with certificates supported and funded
  • Professional fees paid for RCVS, VDS, and BCVA
  • Accommodation potentially available
  • Enhanced maternity/paternity/adoption leave and generous sick pay
  • Workplace nursery scheme
