Job summary

St Austell Community Hospital, part of Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, is seeking a motivated Healthcare Assistant for the OPD and MIU. You will undertake venepuncture, wound care and dressings, plaster application and removal, and monitor patient observations in a busy urgent care setting.

You will work within a multidisciplinary team, support triage and assessment of minor injuries, ensure accurate documentation, and provide compassionate patient care under supervision.

Qualifications

• GCSE Maths & English or equivalent qualification/experience.
• NVQ 3 in Direct Care.
• Previous experience as a HCA within a hospital setting.
• Desirable: experience of working in an urgent care environment / out-patient department / ward environment.

Responsibilities

• Support MIU and OPD practitioners in assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of patient care.
• Undertake a range of clinical duties, including wound care and dressings, plaster application and removal, patient observations, and assisting with triage following completion of competencies.
• Register and book patients into the department and ensure accurate documentation is maintained.
• Provide a high standard of patient care and attend to patients' general needs throughout their visit.
• Deliver care safely and effectively under the supervision of trained MIU and OPD clinicians.
• Provide administrative and clerical support to the multidisciplinary team to ensure smooth service delivery.

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a position within the busy Outpatient Department (OPD) and Minor Injury Unit (MIU) at St Austell Community Hospital.

We are seeking a motivated and compassionate individual to join our team, providing high-quality care to patients attending the department. The successful candidate will undertake a range of clinical duties including venepuncture, wound care and dressings, plaster application and removal, recording and monitoring patient observations, and supporting the assessment and triage of patients presenting with minor injuries and illnesses.

This role offers the opportunity to work within a supportive multidisciplinary team in a varied and fast-paced environment, delivering safe, effective, and patient-centred care.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will ideally have experience working within an Urgent Treatment Centre, Minor Injury Unit (MIU), or Outpatient Department (OPD), and have completed relevant MIU skills and triage competencies.

Key responsibilities will include:

• Supporting MIU and OPD practitioners in the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of patient care.
• Undertaking a range of clinical duties, including wound care and dressings, plaster application and removal, patient observations, and assisting with triage following completion of the relevant competencies.
• Registering and booking patients into the department and ensuring accurate documentation is maintained.
• Providing a high standard of patient care and attending to patients' general needs throughout their visit.
• Delivering all care safely and effectively under the supervision of trained MIU and OPD clinicians.
• Providing administrative and clerical support to the multidisciplinary team as required to ensure the smooth running of the service.
• Contributing to a positive patient experience by maintaining a professional, compassionate and patient-centred approach at all times.

The role requires the ability to remain calm and work effectively under pressure within a busy and often unpredictable urgent care environment. A commitment to ongoing professional development and a willingness to undertake further training and competency-based learning are essential.
