Job summary

Joseph Gallagher Ltd, a leading tunnelling subcontractor in the UK, is recruiting a Lead Miner. You will drive safety on site, ensure RAM/SOS briefings are completed, and hold the correct qualifications for the role.

You will report near misses, maintain clean work areas, enforce H&S policies, and ensure PPE use and COSHH handling. Lifting, plant use, and permits must be managed by qualified personnel.

Responsibilities

• Ensure personal and others' safety on site.
• Sign up to RAM and SOS Briefings for each task.
• Hold the correct qualification for the role.
• Report near misses, incidents or accidents to the lead miner.
• Keep the work area neat and carry out housekeeping when needed.
• Enforce H&S policy to create a safe workplace.
• Wear PPE: hard hat, safety glasses, boots; use COSHH materials correctly.
• Do not operate untrained or unauthorized plant/equipment.
• Respect exclusion zones and keep tools and plant in a safe place.
• Report damaged or worn plant to the lead miner.
• Clean plant and tools after use; minimize manual handling when possible.
• Ensure lifting operations are carried out by approved persons and permits are in place before starting.

As the Lead Miner, your responsibilities may include:

• To ensure the safety of yourself and those around you.
• Ensure that you understand and sign up in every RAM and SOS Briefing you are working to.
• Ensure you hold the correct qualification for the role you are providing.
• Report any near miss, incident or accident to JGL Supervisor.
• Ensure work area is neat and tidy at all times. If necessary, stop working and carry out general housekeeping in the area for a few minutes.
• Carry out and enforce H&S policy to create a safe workplace.
• Use your phone in designated areas only and in a safe way.
• Make sure that you and the rest of your team wear protective clothing and PPE such as hard hat, safety glasses, safety boots, etc.
• Ensure all COSHH materials are used, stored and disposed of correctly.
• Never operate plant or equipment that you are neither authorized nor trained to use.
• Respect the exclusion zones at all times making sure that you do not work in a dangerous area and keeping tools and plant in a safe place.
• Report any damaged or worn plant to lead miner.
• Ensure all plant and tools are cleaned at the end of the shift if not in further use.
• Try to eliminate manual handling so far as is reasonably practicably (use mechanical handling). Where manual handling must be carried out, ensure that it is in accordance with the right procedures.
• Only stack materials in designated areas ensuring that escape routes, doorways, etc., are not obstructed.
• Ensure lifting operations are carried out by approved persons.
• Ensure all permits are in place before commencing work.
