Are you an experienced midwife interested in working in a friendly unit with 2200 births committed to implementing the Better Births Agenda?

We have a number of permanent Band 6 posts available in our Midwifery team at Ormskirk Hospital. Our posts are rotational throughout the service and would give the successful candidate the opportunity to work with us as we move forward in implementing the Ockenden requirements.

This vacancy may close should a sufficient number of applications be received.

An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for this post.

Providing antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal care to women and their families.

Our Services
  • Acute Care: Providing emergency and maternity services at Whiston, Southport and Ormskirk hospitals, and medical and surgical specialties across all our sites.
  • Primary Care: Providing primary care services at Marshalls Cross Medical Centre situated in St Helens Hospital.
  • Community Services: Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancs. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.
  • Specialist Regional Services: We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

Achievements include being rated Outstanding by CQC Inspection in August 2018, being among the Top 100 places to work in the NHS, and receiving the National Preceptorship Accreditation in 2023 for Nursing & AHP Preceptorship Programme.

Clinical & Professional Responsibilities
  • Adhere to NMC Rules and Code of Practice and abide by the Code of Professional Practice.
  • Accept responsibility for personal, professional, and education needs, including attending in-services and statutory study days.
  • Support and empower women throughout pregnancy and postnatal childbirth, enabling informed choices about their care.
  • Work as an autonomous, competent practitioner within Trust guidelines.
  • Participate in audit and research within Maternity Services.
  • Provide sensitive support for bereaved parents and challenging family situations, including Child Protection, Substance Misuse, and Domestic Violence issues.
  • Promote health issues and participate in parent education.
  • Report accidents and incidents as per risk management policy.
  • Maintain midwifery competencies and stay updated with current evidence-based practices.
  • Ensure compliance with all Trust policies on Risk Management, Research Governance, and Infection Control.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in line with Trust standards.
  • Undertake mandatory infection control training and adhere to relevant policies.
  • Manage own health and well-being.
  • Identify and report concerns related to child protection to relevant authorities.
  • Respect cultural, ethnic, and religious beliefs in midwifery care.
  • Contribute to quality and performance targets.
Line Management/Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Promote effective communication within multidisciplinary teams and with external agencies.
  • Mentor Student Midwives/Nurses and support junior staff.
  • Help maintain a safe working environment and report issues promptly.
  • Participate in policy and protocol development relevant to the specialty.
  • Provide leadership and support during shifts, including overseeing the Maternity Unit out of hours as required.
