Diabetes in pregnancy increases the risk of serious health complications to women and their babies. The diabetes team at South Warwickshire Foundation Trust (SWFT) helps support women with diabetes to greatly reduce these risks. We have an exciting opportunity for a midwife with experience in diabetes. You will be part of the multi-disciplinary diabetes team providing high standards of care within maternity.
Main duties of the job:
- Develop leadership and management skills and promote a proactive approach for diabetes care within Maternity Services.
- Serve as an expert resource for diabetes for midwives and junior doctors to ensure effective, evidence-based care within the Trust.
- Assist in designing and delivering educational programmes and study days relevant to your specialty.
- Work closely with the diabetes multidisciplinary team, managing clinics for women with gestational diabetes for assessment, education, and monitoring in line with evidence-based guidelines.
Supporting the Lead Diabetes Specialist Midwife (DSM):
The post holder will support the DSM in maintaining and enhancing standards of care for diabetes in pregnancy, including leadership, education, and clinical management responsibilities.

Job responsibilities
Responsibilities:
- Provide clinical advice and support to staff, advocating for patients at all times.
- Monitor and evaluate clinical standards, ensuring evidence-based practices aligned with best practice locally, regionally, and nationally.
- Ensure accurate documentation and record keeping in accordance with NMC and Trust guidelines.
- Liaise with the DSM, Continuity Matron, Head of Midwifery, and operational managers to inform governance processes from lessons learned.
- Act as an autonomous practitioner providing specialised advice and support to women with pre-existing and gestational diabetes, their families, and healthcare professionals.
- Address the needs of women from diverse ethnic backgrounds with appropriate educational materials.
- Develop expertise in treatments used during pregnancy, under guidance from the DSM, DSN, or endocrinologist.
- Educate women and families on insulin administration and blood glucose monitoring.
- Support diabetes clinics, including ante-natal checks, ultrasound reviews, and coordination with medical teams.
- Plan and coordinate care programs and multidisciplinary activities.
- Supervise and support midwives and junior staff, participating in mentoring.
- Represent the role of the Diabetes Specialist Midwife on clinical pathway groups.
- Manage the safe administration of drugs according to policies and regulations.
Management

Person Specification
Qualifications
- Registered Midwife
- Degree-level professional midwifery training
- Preceptorship completion
- Recognised Teaching and Assessor Qualification
