Job description

Who we are and what we do

Little, Brown's identity is personified by our innovative, dynamic, and free-thinking people. Across our thirteen imprints, you won't find a wider range of titles anywhere in UK publishing. We pride ourselves on quality and diversity. A repeat recipient of the Publisher of the Year award, we're one of the most successful and dynamic publishers in the UK.

Little, Brown is a division of Hachette, one of the largest publishing groups in the UK, with 12 publishing divisions and over 60 imprints. Everyone here is proud to be in the business of opening doors and minds.

What you'll be doing

Reporting to the Commercial Art Director, you’ll be key to bringing our books to life, working alongside a team of highly creative, well-regarded, and hardworking designers who tackle the challenges for a diverse range of books. You will be a vital part of the team, expected to work across all our imprints, handling the creative process from initial brief to final artwork. You’ll have creative autonomy and the opportunity to commission illustrators, photographers, and other designers. A major part of your day will be developing strong working relationships with our editorial teams, where conveying ideas clearly and interpreting feedback effectively will be key.

Who we are looking for

This is an ideal opportunity for someone looking to gain more experience in a busy and creative department. You should be enthusiastic about working across many publishing genres, with a passion for commercial cover design and proven experience in this area. Your abilities should enable you to understand our readers and design covers that engage them. An impressive portfolio demonstrating your design talents, problem-solving skills, excellent communication, and the ability to respond creatively to feedback are essential. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and knowledge of print and digital reproduction are also required.

In your application, please submit your CV, cover letter, and a portfolio of recent relevant work (included in the cover letter section).

What we offer

Our staff are our greatest asset, and our benefits reflect this:

  • 28 annual leave days, increasing to 29 after 2 years, and 30 after 5 years (+ bank holidays)
  • Private medical insurance
  • Generous pension schemes
  • Rent deposit loans
  • 2 community days per year
  • Summer hours (finishing at 1pm on Fridays during summer)
  • Retail discounts through Hachette rewards
  • Cycle to Work scheme
  • Eye care vouchers
  • Wide-ranging training library
  • Development programmes (including mentoring)
  • Up to 70% off book purchases
  • A charity bookshelf
  • 12 Staff-led employee networks, including Gender Balance, Thrive, Pride, All Together, Wellbeing and others
  • Season ticket loans
  • And much more!

This role can be based at our London office or at regional offices in Sheffield, Edinburgh, Newcastle, or Bristol, with a blend of in-office (3 days) and homeworking (2 days) per week.

Hachette employs people based on their abilities. We aim to attract and develop talent from diverse backgrounds to reflect the broad readership we serve, including various ages, faiths, disabilities, races, genders, sexualities, and socio-economic, regional, and cultural backgrounds.
