Reading School District is seeking a Volleyball Assistant Coach for the middle school program. The role focuses on creating a safe, positive environment and promoting good sportsmanship while supporting student-athletes in developing skills and life lessons through athletics.

The coach will work flexible hours, including early mornings, afternoons, weekends, and holidays, and must adhere to PIAA and district policies. A high school diploma is required along with supervision experience preferred.

Qualifications

  • Prefer experience supervising in athletics, recreation, education, or related fields.
  • Exceptional interpersonal communication in diverse environments.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise student athletes
  • Stay current with coaching rules, techniques, schemes
  • Monitor athletes to prevent injuries
  • Place athletes in positions to develop sport and life skills
  • Communicate with sports medicine staff, officials, parents, and staff
  • Ensure safety measures and proper equipment care
  • Attend training sessions and staff meetings
  • Work flexible hours including mornings, afternoons, evenings, weekends
  • Verify eligibility per PIAA and district policies
  • Secure equipment and facilities after use
  • Communicate with admin, safe schools, custodians as needed
  • Foster youth group participation and growth
  • Be a positive role model for student-athletes
  • Support all RSD athletics

POSITION GOAL:

The successful candidate will be responsible for creating a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe conditions in accordance with PIAA, league, sports medicine and RSD policies/procedures. Furthermore the candidate will be responsible for assisting student-athletes to establish a life after high school while instilling Red Knight pride, connecting with youth programs, teaching education through athletics, and fundraising.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be a minimum age of 18 years old.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Preferable experience working in a supervision role in athletics, recreation, education, or related fields.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills including the ability to effectively communicate with adults and students in a diverse work environment.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Supervise student athletes
  • Stay current with current rules, coaching techniques, schemes, and best practices
  • Monitor student-athletes to prevent accidents and injuries.
  • Place student-athletes in positions to succeed not only in their sport, but also in life
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills including communication skills with sports medicine staff, game workers, officials, media, students, parents, spectators, and facility staff.
  • Ensures that all possible safety measures are observed, including taking proper care of equipment and proper surveillance of program participants.
  • Attend all training sessions and any additional staff meetings.
  • Work flexible hours including off season training, early mornings, afternoon/evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Verify student-athletes are eligible by PIAA and Reading School District Athletic policies.
  • Secure equipment and facilities after each usage
  • Communicate with RSD admin, safe schools, custodial services and/or RPD as needed.
  • Communicate with youth groups and foster participation growth
  • Be a good role model to student-athletes
  • Support all RSD athletics
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Physically perform all skills required of a coach.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in a crowded athletic facility.
  • Able to withstand extreme weather conditions
