Job summary

Beacon Middle School is seeking a School-Based Counselor to support student mental health and well-being within a dynamic educational setting. You will provide brief screenings, individual and group counseling, and collaborate with teachers and families to promote emotional growth and academic success.

The role requires a Master’s in Social Work or related field with licensure eligibility or active licensure, and a commitment to ongoing professional development.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling or related field; clinical licensure preferred (LCSW/LPCMH/LMFT).
  • Must obtain licensure within 2 years of hire; LMSW acceptable at hire.
  • Strong understanding of child and adolescent development.
  • Experience with crisis intervention and conflict resolution.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, parents, and school administration.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency in maintaining accurate and confidential records.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development and staying current with best practices in school-based therapy.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and reliable transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide mental health counseling and support to students.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans.
  • Collaborate with teachers, staff, and parents to support student well-being and academics.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential therapy records.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to plan services.
  • Educate school staff on mental health awareness and best practices.
  • Advocate for students’ mental health needs and connect to external resources.
  • Conduct school-based group counseling using evidence-based models.
  • Provide crisis assessment and clinical interventions as needed.
  • Travel to meetings and trainings as required.

Description

  • Join our dedicated team as a School-Based Counselor, where you will play a vital role in supporting the mental health and well-being of students.
  • You will work collaboratively within a dynamic educational environment to provide essential therapeutic services, fostering a nurturing atmosphere that promotes emotional growth and academic success.
  • The Behavioral Health Consultant Program is a year-round program providing brief mental health screening and individual, group and family mental health counseling services in middle school settings across the state of Delaware.
  • Provide intervention for students and families that address the student’s behavior and family issues that impact school performance and social and emotional development.
  • Develop and implement individualized treatment plans based on student assessments and needs.
  • Collaborate with teachers, school staff, and parents to support student well-being and academic success.
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of therapy sessions and student progress.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings to discuss student cases and develop comprehensive support strategies.
  • Educate and train school staff on mental health awareness and best practices for supporting students.
  • Advocate for students’ mental health needs and connect them with external resources and services when necessary.
  • Provide assessment, planning, counseling/therapy, referrals, advocacy, and collateral contacts.
  • Establish comprehensive plans for services to ensure student and family needs are met.
  • Conduct school based group counseling/therapy using an evidenced-based model.
  • Provide crisis assessment, clinical interventions, psycho-educational groups and training to school professionals, parents, guardians and family members.
  • Adhere to an evidenced-based social work model, principles and practices.
  • Document all screenings, assessments and consultations in appropriate database.
  • Travel required to attend meetings and training.

Requirements
  • Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling or related degree with a clinical license (LCSW, LPCMH, LMFT), preferred. Master's degree in Social Work, Counseling or related degree and license eligible (LCSW, LPCMH, LMFT), required. Must take the exam within 2 years of hire date for clinical licensure. Professionals with a master's degree in social work must have a minimum of an LMSW upon hire.
