Job summary

Sirjohnheron is seeking a Midday Assistant on a fixed-term basis until July 2027 to help ensure pupil safety, wellbeing and positive behaviour at lunchtime across the dining hall, playground and other areas.

The role involves supervising pupils, encouraging good manners, assisting with meals, handling minor first aid, and reporting incidents in line with school policies; you will be part of the wider school staff team and contribute to a caring, inclusive ethos.

  • Supervise pupils in dining areas, promoting calm and orderly environments.
  • Encourage good table manners and positive social interaction during meals.
  • Assist pupils with carrying trays or cutting food as needed.
  • Clear up minor spillages or accidents promptly and safely.
  • Supervise playground and indoor play during lunch and wet weather.
  • Facilitate cooperative play and help resolve disagreements.
  • Report safeguarding concerns or incidents to SLT or DSL as required.
  • Ensure pupils return safely to class after lunch and follow school procedures.

Purpose of Post :
  • The Midday Assistant plays a key role in ensuring the safety, well-being, and positive behaviour of pupils during the lunchtime period. The role involves supervising pupils in the dining hall, playground, or other designated areas, promoting good manners and safe play, and supporting the school in creating a positive lunchtime environment.
  • The post holder will be part of the wider school staff team and will contribute to the school's ethos of care, inclusion, and respect for all.
  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of all pupils and young people, and follow school policies and the staff code of conduct
Key areas of responsibility / Principal Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supervise pupils in the dining areas, ensuring a calm and orderly atmosphere.
  • Encourage good table manners and positive social interaction during meals.
  • Assist pupils where needed, including with carrying trays or cutting food.
  • Clear up minor spillages or accidents promptly and safely.
  • Supervise safe play in the playground or indoor areas during wet weather.
  • Facilitate appropriate games and activities in the playground to make lunchtime enjoyable for pupils.
  • Facilitate co-operative play between pupils and support with the resolution of disagreements that occur.
  • Support children with minor first aid needs and report any significant incidents to a member of the Senior Leadership Team on duty or the Headteacher.
  • Ensure all pupils return safely to class at the end of the lunch period.
  • Report any concerns, incidents, or accidents following school procedures.
Health, Safety & Behaviour
  • Uphold the school's behaviour policy, promoting respect, inclusion, and kindness.
  • Encourage pupils to make safe and sensible choices during lunch and play.
  • Monitor and respond to any unsafe behaviour or hazards.
  • Follow hygiene and safety guidelines when cleaning or supporting pupils.
  • Be alert to any safeguarding concerns and report immediately to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
General responsibilities
  • Safeguard and promote the welfare of children, ensuring a safe and supportive environment; develop and apply the necessary skills and knowledge to uphold these responsibilities at all times.
  • Show a responsible attitude to health and safety issues and have due regard for their personal safety and that of others.
  • Support, uphold and contribute to the development of the school's equal rights policies and practices in respect of both employment issues and the delivery of services to the community.
  • Undertake any other appropriate duties relevant to the purpose of the post and within the grading and competency of the post holder, as reasonably required by the Headteacher or Senior Leadership Team.
