Job description

Microwave Heating and Current Drive Physicist (2-Year FTA)

The salary for this role is £40,609 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days a week, with active support for flexible working requests.

This role is based in Culham, Oxfordshire.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

The Role

As Microwave Heating and Current Drive Physicist, you will play a pivotal role in developing theoretical models of microwave plasma interaction and designing and implementing experiments to test theoretical predictions.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Develop theoretical models for microwave-plasma interaction, with a focus on Electron Bernstein Wave interaction.
  2. Design, plan, and execute experiments to test theoretical predictions.
  3. Develop diagnostics specific to microwave-plasma interaction.
  4. Publish research in peer-reviewed journals.
  5. Publicise work internally and at national and international conferences.
  6. Participate actively in collaborations with external partners.
£42,858 (including Specialist Allowance) + excellent benefits including a strong pension scheme.
  • Proven track record in publishing research on microwave-plasma interaction.
  • Experience with Electron Bernstein Waves is desirable.
  • Experience presenting at international conferences.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to interact with various stakeholders (wider physics team, management, external collaborators).

Your career development as a scientist will be strongly supported, including working towards chartership with the Institute of Physics.
