An opportunity has arisen for a talented leader to join the newly created and rapidly expanding Metro Unit at National World. The digital Metro team includes iconic titles such as the Lancashire Post, Blackpool Gazette, Sunderland Echo, Shields Gazette, LiverpoolWorld, ManchesterWorld, BristolWorld, and NewcastleWorld.

National World is passionate about quality local journalism, campaigning for our communities, and serving as a guide to our cities. We are seeking a leader to manage and inspire our journalists as a people and content manager.

The ideal candidate should be creative, calm under pressure, possess excellent news judgment, and be a great collaborator who enjoys nurturing talent and developing skills. The role involves making quick decisions and managing content to engage and grow our audience across city brands.

This position requires working closely with the Metro Group Editor to oversee digital content plans and manage contributions from various sources. The successful applicant will be a NQJ-trained senior journalist, preferably with digital newsroom leadership experience, capable of embracing change and building relationships across our cities.

The role is hybrid, involving both office and remote work.

We are looking for an ambitious, proactive leader who is skilled at building rapport, comfortable communicating internally and externally, interpreting data, and planning ahead.

The candidate should be a journalist motivated by high engagement, understanding that analytics are vital indicators of content quality.

The role requires a fast, accurate content editor capable of generating ideas and amplifying digital content across multiple platforms.

Additionally, the candidate should be a team-focused leader who encourages development and growth among team members.

Flexibility to work shifts and weekends as needed is essential.

Ideal skills and experience include:

  • Leadership experience in managing journalists or senior journalism experience with demonstrable leadership skills
  • Sound legal knowledge and understanding of the IPSO code
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Engaging writing style with understanding of digital platforms and audience engagement
  • Ability to analyze and react to digital analytics
  • Strong team engagement and multitasking abilities
  • Self-motivated, highly organized, able to manage workload efficiently
  • Residency within the Metro Unit area

We offer a competitive salary, pension, valuable experience, training, and career progression within a friendly team.

Please note, this role is remote, but applicants must reside in the UK.

National World is committed to diversity and inclusion as an equal opportunity employer. All applications will be considered without regard to race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or age. Flexible working and job share options are available for all roles.
