Job summary

Pelican is a customer services company based near Bristol, seeking a Meter Reader to obtain and verify water meter readings primarily in Frome, Weymouth, Dorchester and surrounding areas. The role is 37 hours per week, typically 08:00–16:00, with a life-friendly approach to flexible patterns where possible.

You will read meters in all weathers, verify data, support unregistered customers to set up accounts, and maintain high service levels while following safety procedures and a lone worker

Qualifications

• Must be physically fit for outdoor field work.
• Strong customer-focused communication skills.
• Ability to interpret simple data and follow schedules.
• Live in Weymouth, Portland or Dorchester area and hold a full UK driving licence.

Job description

We are looking for a Meter Reader to join our hard working and friendly team to obtain and verify water meter readings for Bristol Water and Wessex Water. Living locally to Frome, Radstock and surrounding areas would be ideal, as you will mainly work in the BA11 and BA3 area.

What you'll do

You will be taking and accurately recording data from water meters to an agreed schedule or on an appointment basis. The meter reading round walk will vary, one day you may be reading several meters in a built-up area and the next covering larger distances in more remote areas, you will also conduct empty property inspections to identify unregistered customers and support them to set up an account. You will represent us to everyone you meet, recognising signs of customer vulnerability, and provide a high level of service signposting our customers to further support when needed.

You will work in all weather conditions to set targets and will be on your own for most of the time. The role involves lots of movement, bending, lifting, and moving debris like cobwebs, muck, and vegetation out of the way to gain access to what you need whilst ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of the public and yourself at all times.

We will provide a vehicle, mobile phone, personal protective equipment, uniform and all the tools you need to do the job. We also operate an innovative ‘lone worker system' to always keep you safe.

Our full-time roles are 37 hours per week Monday to Friday normally starting at 08:00 and finishing at 16:00. If you are looking for more flexible hours, we're a life friendly employer encouraging our team members to have a working pattern that fits in with their life.

What you'll need

You will love being outdoors in all weathers, enjoy being active and have a high level of physical fitness. You will enjoy working on your own, be self-motivated and dedicated to doing a good job.

We are looking for someone who is customer focussed with strong communication skills. We have a wide range of customers, and you will be able to tailor your style to build rapport easily.

You will need to have great attention to detail to ensure we get it right first time and be able to work to targets, you will also be able to interpret simple data to reduce mis-reads and be a good map reader. Ideally you will be able to assess and manage risks associated with a field-based role, recognise ways to improve efficiency and can organise and prioritise your own workload.

To be considered for this role you will need to live in and have a familiarity of the Weymouth, Portland and Dorchester area as well as holding a full UK driving licence.
