Job Description:

We are seeking an experienced metallurgist to manage our Metallurgy Department and provide specialist metallurgical input. The role will be based at our London laboratories with some site work in London, the UK, and occasionally overseas.

The Role

The Metallurgy Department specializes in identification and characterization of samples, weld qualification, failure investigations, and mechanical testing. Our work mainly involves structural steels and cast irons, but also includes stainless steels and copper alloys. Testing includes tensile, impact, hardness tests, and metallurgical microscopy. The department also has a workshop for sample preparation and fabrication of test rigs.

The Laboratory Manager will undertake complex consultancy work such as failure analysis and may serve as an Expert Witness. You will manage the department and lead a small team.

Salary is competitive, based on experience, with potential semi-annual bonuses after six months, and enrollment in the Sandberg pension scheme.

The Person

You should be passionate about metallurgy, eager to lead and develop the department, and willing to participate in hands-on tasks like sample preparation when needed.

  • Bachelor’s degree in metallurgy or materials
  • At least 8 years of experience in metallurgy
  • Strong knowledge of ferrous metallurgy, especially structural steel
  • Experience in supervisory/managerial roles
  • Failure analysis experience
  • Knowledge of cuprous, nickel, and aluminium metallurgy

  • UK recognized driving license
