Job summary

Richards Sheet Metal Ltd invites applicants for a Fabrication Apprentice to develop practical skills in a busy Nelson workshop. You will train to weld using MIG and TIG processes, and gain competence in measuring, marking out and reading basic engineering drawings.

You will learn to handle sheet metal components and castings, with hands-on practice in a supportive team. Key training outcomes focus on practical skill development, teamwork and problem solving.

Qualifications

  • GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including English and Maths.
  • Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Teamworking and initiative.
  • Willingness to learn metal fabrication techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Welding components.
  • Welding castings.

Introduction

Richards Sheet Metal began in 1973 as traditional tin bashers, founded by Donald Richards to serve industries around Nelson and Burnley. Now a well-established, family-run SME, they are renowned for quality and reliability and seek a motivated Fabrication Apprentice to develop practical skills in a supportive workshop.

What You'll Do

Fabricators use a large range of metals including steel, aluminium and titanium at a range of thicknesses from 0.5mm up to over 20mm.

The successful candidate will train and become competent at welding, components and castings, learning to weld both MIG & TIG to a very high standard.

You will also be trained to learn:

  • Basic engineering drawing.
  • Measuring and marking out.
  • Knowledge of engineering materials.
  • Handling of engineering information.

Additional skills covered may include:

  • Fitting using hand skills.
  • Producing sheet metal components and assemblies using a range of welding techniques and principles.

Your job role will consist of different tasks such as:

  • Welding components.
  • Welding Castings.
