Job Description
MEP Design Manager – Data centres – Milton Keynes
Our client is a dynamic, fast-growing data centre developer. They have expanded rapidly, mainly through acquisitions, over the last few years and now operate 60 sites across Europe. The organisation is still actively acquiring new sites and plans to add a further 10 in the near future, with ongoing discussions for additional locations over the next 12-18 months.
The client is about to undertake a series of upgrades, refurbishments, and extensions to their existing UK sites. They are seeking a MEP Design Manager to join their team.
Responsibilities
- Lead Electrical Design Coordination: Take ownership of the electrical design scope across all project stages, ensuring compliance with data centre requirements such as redundancy (e.g., N+1, 2N), scalability, and Tier-level standards (Uptime Institute). Coordinate with mechanical and public health teams to ensure integrated and clash-free MEP design delivery.
- Manage Design Consultants & Specialist Subcontractors: Act as the primary interface between the developer and electrical design consultants, specialist vendors (e.g., UPS, generators, switchgear), and main contractors. Review and challenge technical submissions to ensure alignment with project briefs, performance specifications, and UK/EU regulations (e.g., BS7671, IEC standards).
- Technical Assurance & Compliance: Ensure electrical systems are designed to meet strict data centre standards for uptime, resilience, and energy efficiency (e.g., Power Usage Effectiveness — PUE). Verify compliance with British Standards, CDM regulations, grid connection requirements (DNO/IDNO), and fire protection systems integration (e.g., LV cabling separation).
- Support Construction & Commissioning: Provide technical support during installation, testing, and commissioning phases. Ensure that the as-built electrical systems reflect the design intent. Assist with Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT), Site Acceptance Testing (SAT), and Integrated Systems Testing (IST) for critical electrical infrastructure.
- Risk Management & Programme Support: Identify and manage risks related to electrical design and delivery, such as long-lead items (e.g., MV/LV switchgear, transformers), supply chain constraints, or grid delays. Collaborate with project planners to ensure electrical design milestones align with procurement, construction, and energisation timelines.
