Job summary

The Skanska Costain STRABAG Joint Venture is recruiting a Design Manager for MEPH systems to lead Stage 5 design for the London Tunnels project. You will act as the main contact for design with subcontractor supply chains and oversee asset delivery along the route.

You will report to the Lead MEP Design Manager and collaborate with supply chain partners to ensure that subcontract and technical requirements are met, while improving efficiency and value as works progress.

Qualifications

  • Experience of design management for Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health systems.
  • Experience of detailed design within an MEP setting.
  • Knowledge of policies and standards related to MEP Design.
  • Experience in large-scale self-assured design environments.
  • Ability to work independently and with integrated teams and stakeholders.
  • Experience implementing Construction and Design Management Regulations 2015 in design.
  • Computer competence: MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Document Control, Auto CAD, Navisworks, ProjectWise.
  • Excellent communication skills and adaptable communication style.
  • CSCS Card.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Stage 5 Design Deliverables from the supply chain and ensure timely, quality outputs.
  • Communicate and enforce SCS design processes; handle exceptions when needed.
  • Interface management between Stage 5 Design suppliers and SCS Design Integrator.
  • Handle Stage 5 supplier queries with proactive, collaborative responses.
  • Ensure design supports maintenance, health, safety and welfare in construction and use.
  • Report progress, risks and issues to Package Manager and Delivery teams.
  • Identify scope gaps and resolutions; coordinate with other design teams.
  • Ensure design management plans and assurance plans are followed within scope.

Job Introduction

As the Design Manager for MEPH systems you will take a leading role in the completion of the Stage 5 (Design for Construction & Manufacturing) MEPH design. You will be the principle point of contact for design for the allocated subcontract supply chain members. Your role will oversee the delivery of certain assets along the line of route for the London Tunnels.

You will report to the Lead MEP Design Manager

Working collaboratively with the supply chain partners you will ensure that the subcontract and technical requirements are met, and that lessons are learnt between assets, consistently improving efficiency and our value offering as the works progress.

Main Responsibilities
Stage 5 Supply Chain Design Management
  • Management of Supply Chain Stage 5 Design Deliverables, ensuring that the supply chain submit quality deliverables in a timely manner
  • Ensure that the SCS design processes are communicated and implemented. Identify where deviations from processes are required and ensure that appropriate exceptions processes are implemented.
  • Interface management between Stage 5 Design suppliers and SCS’s Design Integrator, ensuring that deliverables are aligned to one another and that interfaces are identified and managed.
  • Management of Stage 5 supplier queries, interfacing with supply chain and SCS parties to provide responses in a proactive and collaborative manner.
  • Ensuring that design accommodates designing for maintenance and health, safety and welfare during construction and in-use.
  • Reporting on progress of design for your subcontract packages, identifying key risks and issues and ensuring that these are communicated with the Package Manager (Delivery) and Commercial Package Manager.
  • Identification of scope gaps and interface issues within the design, identifying and supporting the implementation of resolutions.
  • Interfacing with the quality, technical assurance, engineering and delivery teams to ensure the delivery of a quality product.
  • Supporting the commercial team in reconciling costs and managing the subcontracts.
  • Tracking and reviewing design documentation
  • Coordinating the review of documentation with the relevant SCS teams
  • Ensure that relevant design management plans and assurance plans are adhered to, within area of responsibility
Stage 4 Contractors Detailed Design
  • Management of Stage 4 design queries and defects. Supporting the Stage 5 designers with identifying these and managing the resolution
  • Managing the Stage 4 resources allocated to your package, ensuring that they’re resources are prioritised and allocated in an efficient manner.
  • Supporting the commercial team in reconciling costs and managing the subcontracts.
CDM Management
  • Ensure that the SCS CDM requirements are communicated and implemented by the supply chain through the design process.
  • Work closely with the CDM lead to ensure that all CDM requirements are met
  • Ensure that robust risk reviews are undertaken as defined in the process
  • Ensure that CDM risks are appropriately communicated between the design parties and with the construction team.
The Ideal Candidate
Essential
  • Experience of design management for Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health systems.
  • Experience of detailed design within an MEP setting
  • Have a knowledge of relevant policies and standards related to MEP Design
  • Experience of working within a large scale self assured design environment.
  • Capable of working independently and proactively to progress works but also skilled at working collaboratively with other integrated team members and external stakeholders for the overall benefit of the project.
  • Experience in the management of the implementation of the requirements of the Construction and Design Management Regs 2015 in design
  • Computer competence (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Document Control Systems, Auto CAD, Navisworks and Projectwise).
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to adjust communication style to suite receiver.
  • Relevant CSCS Card.
Desired
  • A professional qualification or degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering or related subject
  • Be conversant with specialist MEP related engineering software for example Trimble Amtech
  • Knowledge and understanding of working to and implementing NEC construction contracts.

The Skanska | Costain | STRABAG (SCS JV) is delivering the HS2 London Tunnels Contract. Scope of works includes twin-bored tunnels (TBM), SCL tunnels, shaft sinking, bridge demolition and reconstruction, services diversions, earthworks and the construction of site compounds.
